YOUTH MOVEMENT SHINES IN N.E. WI – CLASH WEEK, UPDATED REGIONAL DIRT FEATURE TOTALS & MORE

Outagamie Speedway 970x250

Posted on: Monday June 12, 2023

16-year-old Coy Vlies scored the IMCA northern sportmod feature win at The ‘Burg Speedway Sunday.

If this weekend of racing in northeastern Wisconsin proved anything it’s that the youth movement remains alive and well in the region.

Case in point – The ‘Burg Speedway in Luxemburg’s show Sunday night. At least three of the feature winners were ages 20 and under. Brussels’ Garrett Geyer (Unified street stock is 20), Denmark’s Cole Czarneski (IMCA modified is 18) and Kewaunee’s Coy Vlies (IMCA northern sportmod is 16).

In all three cases, these youngsters are second generation racers who’s dad’s also continue to race.

Geyer’s victory came at the hands after eventual winner Pressley Harrington was disqualified after a post race inspection.  Geyer’s dad, longtime veteran Jason Geyer, got bumped up to 2nd as a result of the DQ. The Geyer family has racing roots that tie in deep into Door County going back several decades.

As for Czarneski he’s got a lot of “tools in the shed” at his disposal, and the Lethal chassis he won with Sunday night the team acquired late last week. It was the recent Denmark high school graduate’s second straight win in the in new car as he also picked up the victory at Outagamie Speedway in Seymour two nights prior. Czarneski’s also got a pair of full time pit crew members at his disposal, which certainly doesn’t hurt.

Coy Vlies looked like a seasoned veteran during his dominating performance in the IMCA northern sportmod feature. Vlies, who will be a junior at Kewaunee High School next fall, also won a week ago at 141 Speedway.

Vlies’ dad, Jeff “PePe” Vlies has been racing since 1998 and is known as a top flight fabricator who bends up tin with his Vlies Custom Bodies gig, making many area cars look sharp.

IT’S CLASH WEEK – It’s hard to believe but this week the 15th running of the Clash At The Creek will take place at 141 Speedway. Folks may have forgotten but the 1st ever Clash was run on the pavement in 2009. It was a wild affair, and featured (sanctioned) IMCA northern sportmods.

Eventual winner and longtime pavement champion Donnie Woller, a Merrill native, was DQ’d following a post-race inspection, which handed the win to Oconto Falls Eric “Chummy” Arneson. The following year in 2010 the event featured IMCA stock cars with Pulaski’s “Hot Rod” Snellenberger winning it.

2011 was the first year featuring IMCA modifieds with Seymour’s Brian Mullen taking the win.

The entire event has been pushed back one day earlier with practice beginning today (Monday) with qualifying races Tuesday and the big $10,000-to-win mod feature Wednesday.

THE HILL BACK ON – After being off for a couple of weeks racing resumes at The Hill Raceway in Sturgeon Bay Saturday June 17. The street stock Busch Shootout will highlight the night’s action at John Miles Park which is set to get underway at 6 p.m.

KARTING KORNER – A kids bike giveaway will be an added attraction at Little Buckaroo Jr. Motorsports Park Friday June 16 for Todd Wiese Homeselling night at the races. A 7 p.m. start time is set for the nine division karting program in Cecil.

Wednesday night, June 14 at GSR Kartway Auto Service Plus night will sponsor the night of kart and lawn mower races at the Clintonville oval. A 7 p.m. start time is on tap.

TAKE DAD TO THE RACES – The annual Father’s Day 100 will take place Sunday, June 18 at The Milwaukee Mile.

This event will be a STARS National Tour event. The action gets underway Sunday at 1 p.m. Joining the super late models on the card will be the Mid American stock cars, Midwest Truck Series, Upper Midwest Vintage Series and Vores Compact Touring Series.

TUNDRA AWASH – The Bev Aschenbrenner Memorial TUNDRA super late model series race was rained out last Saturday at Marshfield Motor Speedway. TUNDRA officials along with MMS promoters are trying to find a raindate.

The next TUNDRA event is slated for July 1 at Dells Raceway Park for the North American Cup dedicated to longtime engine builder Carl Wegner.
