WHITMAN AMONG OUTAGAMIE WINNERS by Joe Orsini
(SEYMOUR, WI) July 26 – 80 cars and stars rolled into Outagamie Speedway in Seymour set to claim victory on the Elite Coatings Night at the Races. With Mother Nature continuing to cooperate the stage was set for another week of hot racing action.
While northeast Wisconsin saw a popular contract put into writing Friday night it was Johnny “The Hitman” Whitman that fulfilled a much more exciting contract. Jayden Schmidt grabbed the opening lap lead of the Professional Plating IMCA Modified A-main event and looked poised to set sail to victory. Caution on lap 11, however, took the wind out of those sails. With the field packed tightly on his tail on the restart Schmidt still looked capable of capturing the win. With Konnor Wilinski and Justin Ritchie scrapping over 2nd Schmidt got some breathing room. That reprieve was short lived as Wilinski dispatched Ritchie and started to close on the leader. By lap 12 Wilinski had caught Schmidt while Whitman powered his way up to 3rd. A failed slide job by Wilinski in turn two caused both he and Schmidt to move up the track and allow Whitman to pass both cars on the inside. Schmidt quickly recovered and caught Whitman at the front. The final 2 laps proved to be a test of both drivers’ nerves as Schmidt tried desperately to regain the lead. Schmidt worked high before diving low but Whitman held off all charges to capture the win. Schmidt settled for 2nd, Wilinski 3rd, Ritchie 4th, and Racin’ Jason Czarapata rounded out the top 5.
Kayden Young leapt out of the front row to lead the opening lap of the Monroe Truck Equipment IMCA Stock Car feature event. An early caution with only one lap in the books reshuffled the deck and the restart saw Jesse Krahn work to 2nd on lap 3 and then shortly after into the lead. Krahn’s time up front was short lived as last week’s winner, Brett Wenzel, raced into the lead on lap 7. By the halfway mark point leader, Hot Rod Snellenberger, worked his way to second. Snellenberger closed to the back bumper of Wenzel and looked primed to grab the lead. Over the closing 5 laps Snellenberger, the wiley veteran, used every tool in his bag of tricks to try and pass Wenzel. Snellenberger was able to pull side by side with Wenzel but the leader was always able to fend off the fan favorite. At the final checker Wenzel held on for back to back wins. Snellenberger was content with 2nd place points, Chase Parker was 3rd, Josh Mroczkowski 4th, and Krahn soldiered on to finish 5th.
Taylor Haufschildt snatched the opening lap of the Trailer Express IMCA Northern Sport Mod feature while JJ Vanderloop worked into the runner up spot quickly. As Vanderloop tried to pressure Haufschildt for the lead Cory Kemkes was able to sneak by and steal 2nd away. The running order remained that way until lap 7 when Kemkes put his machine on the inside of Haufschildt and found the grip on the bottom side to make the pass stick. Caution flew on lap 9 and the ensuing restart saw Vanderloop and Ryan Schmidt battle for second behind Kemkes. Kemkes was able to survive another restart and captured the win. Last week’s winner, Jordan Jahnke, was 2nd, JJ Vanderloop 3rd, Schmidt 4th, and Jerry Vanderloop came home 5th.
While tony Everard and Michael Czarapata held early leads in the Vetting Customs Rigs and Rides Unified Dirt Street Stock main event the race boiled down to a battle at the front between points leader, Trey Van Straten and second place points runner Paul Diefenthaler. It took until lap 13 for that pair to be running one and two on the track just like they were in the points standings but once they found each other the excitement really ramped up. The duo battled back and forth with Diefenthaler wrestling away the lead on lap 18 running the high side but Van Straten wouldn’t back off and continued to run the inside line to perfection and stayed door to door with Diefenthaler. When the checkers flew it was Diefenthaler able to snatch away the win, Van Straten finished second but saw his point lead drop to just a single marker over Diefenthaler. Czarapata was 3rd, Josh McDonald 4th, and Justin Jacobsen was 5th.
The Schulte Construction – Building Blocks Childcare IMCA Sport Compact A-main event saw David Cox, Todd Boehnlein, and Al Cottrell all take turns leading before lap 6 was complete. Cotrell was the last of that group to lead and held off several hard advances from Cody Booth to grab the win. Booth was 2nd, TJ Everard was 3rd, Thomas Schulte followed up last week’s win with 4th, and Boehnlein completed the top 5.
