WENZEL, DORNER & SCHLAFKE GO BACK-T0-BACK; VETTING SNARED 1ST FEATURE FLAG

(STURGEON BAY, WI) AUG. 1 -As the calendar flipped to August the racing action proved to be as hot as the mercury in the thermometer. 74 cars in total signed in to do battle on the ⅓ mile oval in Sturgeon Bay for the Fast & Fun Toy and Hobby night at the races. Also on tap was the third, and final, Dean Distributing Busch shootout, this one for the T. Simon Jewelers Norternh Sport Mods.
The Kroll Machine and Fabrication Stock Car main event opened with John Denil Jr. besting pole sitter, “Uncle” Tony Bouche for the opening lap lead. While Denil ran the low line Billy Lemieux chose to work the high line in an attempt to grab the top spot. The pair staged a door to door battle and were joined by Brett Wenzel and the two car battle turned into a three car knock down, drag out brawl. The lead trio broke away from the pack until caution flew with 13 laps recorded. The restart saw Denil, Wenzel, and Lemieux fall back into a dog fight for the win, as the three battled for the same piece of real estate down the back straight away Denil saw his night end when contact put him into the back stretch wall at the entrance to turn three. This left two heavyweights still in contention and when the final bell rang it was Wenzel securing his second win in as many weeks. Lemieux came home second, Caden Lemieux third, Ford Malvitz fourth, and Dave “The Bulldozer” Bouche fifth.
The T. Simon Jewelers Northern Sport Mod feature event had a flurry of activity in the opening laps as Andy Schmidt led the opening lap but quickly surrendered the top spot on lap 2 as Alec Wery squeezed by on the bottom. Roger Laviolette also snuck by into second the same lap. An early caution with 3 laps complete slowed the pace and the ensuing restart worked to the advantage of Gary Henkel as he wrestled the runner up spot away from Laviolette. Laviolette though dove inside Henkel on lap 5 to regrab 2nd. Meanwhile, back in the pack, last week’s feature winner, Craig Dorner, quietly knifed through the field by running the high line around the speedway. When the yellow flag flew again Wery still led Laviolette but Dorner was now poised to strike, running third when the race slowed. As the field crossed the halfway mark it was now Dorner in the lead as he used the momentum of the higher line to get past Wery. When the checkers flew it was Dorner grabbing his second consecutive feature win, Brayden Lemieux came home second following a late race pass, Wery settled for third, Randy Lemieux Jr. fourth, and Laviolette overcame catastrophic engine issues from the previous week to finish fifth.
Dorner wasn’t finished as he also captured the top prize of 180 Busch Lights courtesy of Dean Distributing in the Busch Light Shootout after the completion of the regular features.
The Millies Pub and Grub Unified Dirt Street Stock A main kicked off with a heated exchange of the lead over the opening laps. Eli Kaye used the pole position to his advantage to grab the lead on lap 1 but Corey Haen drove inside Kaye to lead the 2nd circuit. The action wasn’t finished as Chad Vetting locked up the top spot on lap 3. As laps clicked off Vetting continued to lead while last week’s winner, Dave “The Hammer” DeGrave, gave a furious chase. In the closing laps Vetting became mired behind lap cars and DeGrave quickly closed the gap. It looked as if Vetting was destined to suffer heartbreak at the hands of The Hammer a second week in a row but he was able to fend off the point leader and grabbed his first career feature win at The Hill Raceway. DeGrave padded his point lead with a second place finish, “The Muscles From Brussels” Garrett Geyer was third, “Fast Fox” Tyler Fox fourth, and Bailey “The Bicycle King” Laviolette rounded out the top five.
The Dykesville Bowl 4 Cylinder A-main saw Dallas Topel shoot to the lead from the second row at the drop of the green. “Spiderman” Scott Schlafke worked by the inside of Topel on lap 6 to grab the lead while Chase Ertel snuck by for 2nd two laps later. When the dust settled it was Schlafke capturing his second feature win in a row while Ertel ran second, Brian Watzka Jr. was third, Nathan Bowers brought his Ford home fourth, and Roland Vandehei III was fifth.
The Hill Raceway is back in action Thursday, August 13th, as part of the Door County Fair. Race admission is included for the price of the fair and this will be a points night for our four weekly divisions. Racing starts at 6:30 Thursday night. The track is also in action the Saturday night of the fair, August 15th, with the return of the Dirt King Late Models along with the Midwest Legends Dirt Series, and the Kroll Machine and Fabrication Stock Cars. Racing starts at 6:00 on Saturday and, again, race admission is included with the price of the general fair admission.
