STANCHINA, WELLS NAB FIRST NORWAY LATE MODEL FEATURES

(Pontbriand smashes super stock track record)

(Norway, MI) June 25 – Kingsford drivers Scott Stanchina and Jason Wells split the 20 lap late model features – both capturing their first feature flags of the season at Norway Speedway Friday.

Earlier in the evening Norway’s Joey Pontbriand smashed the super stock track record, laying down a blistering lap of 15.749. The mark eclipsed the old track record, which was set by Escanaba’s Mark Jenshak with a 15.758 on June 30, 2017.

In the first late model main Stanchina squeezed past Kaukauna, Wisconsin’s Will Timmers for the lead on lap nine and never gave up the top spot during the balance of the contest.

In the second late model feature Wells snatched the lead on lap nine and never relinquished the lead, fighting off Stanchina in the waning laps for the victory.

In super stock action defending track champion Ryan Wender fought off former champion Tim Schultz and Pontbriand throughout several caution periods to win the division’s feature, his first here of the year.

Caution free feature wins were also collected by Florence, Wisconsin’s Andy Secrist (sport trucks), Faithorn’s Trevor Cronick (4 bangers) and Spread, Eagle, Wisconsin’s Todd Schmidt (stock cars).

Vintage modified features were won by St. Francis, Wisconsin’s Jim Streseski and Escanaba’s Jesse Denome.

At intermission the class of 2021 for the Norway Speedway Hall of Fame was ushered in. That five members for the class of ‘21 included long time track announcer and U.P. radio voice John Koehler, former racers Fred Gignac and Pat Temple, longtime wrecker volunteer and DCRA board member Brian Swanson and former racer and current NASCAR Cup crew chief Greg Ives.

Next Friday, July 2 the 38th running of the Stateline Challenge presented by Island Resort/Casino and Aurora Liquors will take place. The race is also part of the Kent Pearson Memorial night. Former NASCAR truck champion Johnny Sauter will be racing. A full field of late models is expected, including the defending race champion Justin Mondeik of Gleason, Wisconsin.

Racing gets underway at 7 p.m.
