First Time Season Winners Celebrate At The ‘Burg
By: Joe Orsini
109 drivers checked into the pits and four of those drivers picked up their first feature wins of the season at The ‘Burg Speedway in Luxemburg June 26.
With some heavy hitters starting in the back of the pack, pole sitter Cody Schroeder knew he’d have to jump to an early lead and stretch it out to capture the Village Kitchen IMCA Modified feature.  That is exactly what he did at the drop of the green flag while Jason Czarapata and Todd “Felix” Dart fell into second and third respectively.  Dart went to work inside Czarapata  trying to wrestle away the runner up spot.  Czarapata held off the charging Dart and at the halfway point of the event Shroeder held court over Czarapata, Dart, and Jeff Bodendorfer.  With laps winding down the leader started working through lap traffic while farther back the K9 of Tyler Wilson had sliced through the field from 11th to running fourth.  When the checkers flew Shoeder picked up his first feature win of the season at The ‘Burg in convincing fashion while Dart stole second from Czarapata with a last corner pass and Wilson finished fourth.
The Quietwoods RV IMCA Stock car A-main saw plenty of passing on and off the track as John Heinz piloted his 87 car to the top spot from his P1 starting position.  Dusty Loberger quickly went to the high side and staged a door to door battle with Heinz for the lead.  Loberger eventually cleared Heinz’s machine and started to inch away.  Heinz had no breathing room as he got caught up in a three wide battle for the second spot as he ran low, Kyle Frederick ran the middle, and Josh Mroczkowski ran the top side.Frederick eventually locked down the second spot with Mroczkowski sliding into third.  With laps clicking off Shawn Havel cut through the field and positioned himself to take second as the checkers flew.  Loberger crossed the finish line in first but a failed post race technical inspection resulted in a disqualification moving Havel to victory lane for the first time this season.  Frederick moved up to second, Mroczkowski to third, and Tom Brumlic grabbed a top four finish.
The Outdoor Enhancements LLC IMCA Northern Sport Mod feature outside front row starter Chris Budzban shot to the top at the drop of the green while Craig Dorner worked the high side by Brandon Kaye into second.  Cody Rass wasted no time shooting for his third victory in three weeks by throwing his 14 machine to the high side into third after starting 10th on the opening grid.  The high side continued to work for Rass as he got past Dorner and challenged Budzban for the top spot.  Budzban’s X machine hugged the infield tires while Rass carried momentum around the top groove.  At the halfway mark Budzban held off Rass, Dorner and Robert Wittkopf.  Wittkopf worked inside of Dorner to take the third spot away.  A restart with 8 laps to go scored Budzban in the lead followed by Rass, Wittkopf, Dorner and Cole Czarneski.  Rass continued to badger Budzban over the closing laps but Budzban was able to prevent Rass from achieving the three-peat and captured his first feature win of the season.  Rass settled for a hard fought second, Czarneski took advantage of a pair of late restarts to move up to third, while Wittkopf crossed the stripe in fourth.

The NEW Tech Metals Unified Dirt Street Stock feature had Ford Malvitz lead the opening lap with Travis Zirbel and Shanon Guelette in hot pursuit.  While those three battled up front “The Hammer”, Dave DeGrave, and Jesse Krahn worked into fourth and fifth from their row 4 and 5 starting spots.  Guelette worked the high side around Malvitz and put his 111 machine into the top spot.  At the halfway point Guelette led Krahn and Malvitz around the ⅓ mile oval.  DeGrave put his 40D machine to the high side and took third and was immediately embroiled in a three car battle for the lead with Guelette and Krahn.  Coming to the white flag DeGrave shot into the top spot and held on for his second feature win of the season and first with his new car.  Guelette came home second, Krahn followed up last week’s win with a solid third, and Dylan Breit made an impressive run from 10th to finish in the top four.
The Murder Hornet feature had Brian Watzka Jr. lead the opening lap and did not look back as he led wire to wire while grabbing his first feature win of the season.  The race was marred by a red flag on lap 16 when the 133 of Dallas Topel, making his season debut, rolled along the front stretch and slammed hard into the retaining wall.  Topel emerged unhurt but his 133 machine had to be pulled off the track by the Window Licker Towing and Recovery team.  Scott Schlafke finished second, Adam Broehm third, and Matt Kaye rounded out the top four.
The ‘Burg Speedway will be back in action Sunday night, July 17th, with our Eric Van Iten Memorial Night, featuring a $5000 top prize for the Stock Car winner and a $2500 winner’s purse for the Modifieds.  A total payout of $35,000 is expected to grow and will be on the line for the Mods, Stock Cars, Sport Mods, and Street Stocks.  The event was one of the largest paying, single night dirt track events in the country last year and is poised to be another great night of racing.  The ‘Burg Speedway is located just east of Green Bay off Hwy 54 in Luxemburg at the Kewaunee County Fairgrounds. Gates open at 3:00 every Sunday with racing kicking off at 5:00.
