R.M. VAN PAY – HAVING A BLAST WHEELING AN IMCA STOCK CAR

44-year racing veteran R.M. Van Pay, a Green Bay native, is having a blast racing an IMCA stock car.

For veteran racer R.M. Van Pay, wheeling an IMCA stock car takes him back to a time earlier in his career decades ago.

The Green Bay dirt track veteran who’s won multiple track championships and features piloting an IMCA modified (and earlier in his career in a dirt late model), has reignited his racing career and is having a blast in an IMCA stock car.

For the 62-year-old racer, adding an IMCA stock car to his already busy plate started out as almost a joke for the 44-year racing veteran.
“A few years ago, when 141 (Speedway) started hosting these $10,000-to-win IMCA stock car races, as a team we started joking about getting one and trying to make the show,” Van Pay recalled. “Troy (Jerovetz) was up here, and Joe Kerkhoff had Troy’s old stock car he was driving. I called Joe up, and asked him if I could run it. We got it, raced it, and hurt the motor. We ran it again the next week. And, we hurt the motor again.”

That third week, Van Pay won the division’s heat and feature, sweeping the action at 141. “One thing led to another, and my brother Steve (Van Pay) came home with an IMCA stock car. We’ve been running that and the IMCA modified ever since.”

To Van Pay, wheeling an IMCA stock car doesn’t compare at all to today’s IMCA modified or even the dirt late model he had some success with in the 1980’s and early 1990’s. “It’s really like comparing apples to oranges,” Van Pay explained. “This stock car is so driver friendly. This sort of does remind me of racing my early 1990’s leaf spring modifieds. The car pretty much drives the same as the modifieds did back in the day. That’s because you don’t have the four bars, the rear steer and all of that stuff going on with the back end of the car.”

Try picking a winner when the IMCA stock cars roll onto the track at any dirt oval in northeastern Wisconsin. It’s darn near impossible to pick one, simply because Wisconsin has been and continues to be loaded with talent. “That two barrel carb helps a lot, too,” Van Pay said. “I can see why guys like Benji (LaCrosse) and (Shawn) Kilgore came back to the stock cars and race. I’m truly hooked on racing in this division.”

The car, which is owned by R.M.’s brother Steve, is a 2021 B & B Racing Chassis. “This car we picked up near the Iowa/Nebraska border,” Van Pay explained. “Some guy had it, and it sat for a year. It was raced for half of a season. It’s a good car.”

When you combine a top flight pilot like Van Pay with a top notch race car, that’s a tough combination to beat. Earlier this summer, Van Pay bagged the biggest paying win in his storied racing career when he picked up the $10,000 King Of The Creek in Francis Creek in the stock car. “By far, that was the biggest win of my career,” Van Pay recalled. “I have won some $1,000 and $2,000-to-win modified races, and some late model feature wins, too. But nothing compared to winning this one. It was big.”

Once upon a time, the Van Pay stable had close to one dozen pit crew members, decked out in the familiar orange/yellow Van Pay Racing crew shirts. These days, the extent of the ‘shop help’ is mainly Steve, R.M. and R.M.’s brother Race, who also competes in a modified. “It’s very limited for crew help these days, no doubt,” Van Pay said. “That goes for both the shop and track. Everybody is either retired or has other stuff to do nowadays. I’m fully retired from the paper mill, and Steve is semi-retired. He still runs the bar in Green Bay (VPR 00 Bar). We’re always trying to work on three race cars and basically one guy that can do it all. Steve and Race can come out and work on the cars when they are done with work. It’s a lot of work, though. It really is.”

Just because Van Pay has fallen in love with wheeling this IMCA stock car, don’t think Van Pay will abandon his IMCA modified anytime soon. Van Pay currently sits third in Wisconsin’s all-time feature winners, sitting behind LaCrosse and Brian Mullen.

Benji LaCrosse- 148
Brian Mullen- 131
R.M. Van Pay- 129
Mike Wedelstadt- 117
Todd Dart- 86

One thing you WILL see down the road is Van Pay hitting some of the bigger paying IMCA stock car specials in and out of Wisconsin. “If Steve ever came to me and said hey, let’s go catch this show down in Iowa or wherever it might be, we’ll just load up and go,” Van Pay explained. “Steve owns all of the equipment lock, stock and barrel.”

One common theme this long-time racing veteran is that races are won in the shop – plain and simple. “If you don’t put the time into the cars at the shop, you just aren’t going to have the success on the track,” Van Pay said. “Because in this stock car class, the caliber of drivers is tough. Really tough. It’s hard to pick a winner. You’ve got to have the right setup in, because these cars are so close. It takes every little bit you can get out of the car with the carb and motor making things so equal.”
