LINDSLEY LEADS CONTINGENT OF MICHIGAN DRIVER’S LOOKING TO KEEP STATELINE CHALLENGE TROPHY IN STATE FOR ‘21
(38TH ANNUAL EVENT SLATED FOR JULY 2)
(Norway, MI) June 27 – It’s been a few years since a Michigan driver last won the Stateline Challenge at Norway (MI) Speedway.
Dalton Zehr, who was living in Menominee at the time is the last Michigan winner (2017) to capture the annual border battle event. Since that time Wisconsin drivers have swept Upper Michigan’s biggest stock car race, with NASCAR truck champion Johnny Sauter winning in 2018, Travis Sauter in 2019 and Gleason, Wisconsin’s Justin Mondeik finding victory lane in ’20.
Former track champion Dan Lindsley is looking to keep that winner’s trophy in state. The 38th annual running of the Stateline Challenge is set at the third-mile, paved oval for Friday, July 2. The Vulcan native has won the weekly super late model championship twice (2014 and 2020) but winning the Stateline Challenge is one event Lindsley would like to add to his resume.
“It’s one race that’s always plagued me for some reason,” Lindsley said. “I finished second to Dalton Zehr one year and that’s the closest I’ve gotten. It’s going to take a good car, a little bit of luck and most certainly doing your homework before you get there for sure.”

Other Michigan regulars who plan on competing in the 2021 edition of the Stateline Challenge include Kingsford drivers Scott Stanchina, Jason Wells and Bruce White, Norway’s Joey Pontbriand, Vulcan’s Mike Lantange and Dean Varda, Marquette’s Mike D’Angelo Jr. and Scott Bolster, Waucedah’s Tanner Kelly, Iron Mountain’s Cory Cootware and the tracks top rookie contender 15-year-old Wyatt Spade of Norway. Spade is Lindsley’s stepson.
Johnny Sauter leads the Wisconsin contingent along with defending race winner Mondeik, who’s scored one feature win at Norway so far in ’21. Manitowoc’s Gregg Haese plans on competing, along with former race winner Mike Reichenberger of Appleton, Central Wisconsin standout Mark Mackesy of Wausau, Kaukauna’s Will Timmers, Green Bay’s Louis Goss and Neenah’s Braison Bennett, among others.
The list of former winners of Norway Speedway’s Stateline Challenge reads like a “who’s who” of short track racers in the Midwest. With Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin legend Dick Trickle winning the inaugural race in 1981.
A 75-lap super late model feature is on tap. The event is presented by Island Resort Casino and Aurora Liquors. The race also serves as the Kent Pearson Memorial.
The pit gates open at 3 p.m. Qualifying begins at 5:30 p.m. Racing gets underway at 7 p.m.
