KARCZ, WERY & MOEDE GRAB STURGEON BAY FEATURE FLAGS by Joe Orsini
(STURGEON BAY, WI) AUG. 13 – 71 cars and stars rolled into the pits for the Dean’s Distributing Night at the Hill Raceway. The special Thursday night show was part of the Door County Fair festivities and the stands filled with fairgoers experiencing the spectacle of dirt track racing.
The Kroll Machine and Fabrication Stock Car main event opened with Junior Karcz shooting to the lead from his pole position starting spot. Eddie “The Eagle” Anschutz locked up the runner up spot on lap three and tried to reel in the leader. Karcz continued to hold court at the halfway mark with Anschutz running second, John Aschutz third, Jeremy Anshutz fourth, and Trent Nolan fifth. That positioning remained mostly unchanged at the checkers as Karcz held on for the win in his first trip to the track this season, Eddie Anschutz was second, John Anschutz third, Troy Muench snuck into fourth, and Nolan capped off the top five.
The T. Simon Jewelers Northern Sport Mod feature event saw the first attempt at completing the opening lap result in a massive pile up of cars in the middle of turn four. Collin Massart, George Henkel, Trevin Veeser, Nathan Lemay, and Gary Henkel all saw their nights end before the race even started. After the track was cleared the second attempt at a start resulted in Alec Wery grabbing the lead. Wery never looked back and captured the win. Point leader, Brayden Lemieux, added to his lead with a second place finish, Rick Lemieux was third, Randy Lemieux Jr. was fourth, and Craig Dorner rounded out the top five.
The Millies Pub and Grub Unified Dirt Street Stock A main kicked off the night’s features and Derek Moede wrestled the lead away from the field on the opening lap. Point leader, Dave “The Hammer” DeGrave slid into the second spot just past the halfway mark and gave chase but was unable to catch the leader. Moede hung on for his first win of the season in just his second night at the track. DeGrave was content to add to his point lead with the runner up finish, Tyler Schrimpf capped off a solid night with a third place run, Derek Kaye finished fourth in a strong return to the track after suffering heavy damage earlier in the season, and Corey Haen completed the top five.
The Hill Raceway is back in action this Saturday, August 15th, with our second night of fair racing. The special Saturday program will feature a $5000 top prize for the Dirt Kings Late Model touring series winner with a minimum of $500 paid out to start the feature. The Midwest Legends Dirt Series and the Kroll Machine and Fabrication Stock Cars will also be in action. The racing portion of the Door County Fair is included in the price of the fair admission which is an inflation busting $12!
