DOING YOUR HOMEWORK by Joe Verdegan

(JULY, 2024 MONTHLY MOTORSPORTS MARKETING MAIL TIP)

When a racer thinks of homework thoughts most likely go back to their days of middle school or high school or perhaps even college.

But the phrase ‘doing your homework’ is most applicable when it comes to learning about the businesses you are seeking to partner up with in some sort of sponsorship form for your racing operation.

Too many times teams will go in ‘blind’ essentially – whipping out sponsorship decks and sending them to anyone and everyone. Nothing really wrong with that but its critical to learn as much as you can about the business or businesses you are pursuing and learn about them. That is if you want to be taken seriously.

Are they already advertising? Where? Radio? Facebook advertisements? Television? A highway billboard? Or perhaps something else?

It’s no secret that businesses all have to have an avenue to ‘get the word out’ and doing a little legwork and learning what you can about these businesses ahead of time will put you ahead of the curve when it comes time to talk turkey.

Before you send out a deck, learn what industry the company is in, what the company’s market share is, what its distribution strategy is, whether or not the company is private or public and whether or not the company is a franchise.

When you learn these things it can make it easier to customize a sponsorship deck to send their way. And whatever you do – ALWAYS get the proper name, spelling and job title for the decision maker. Otherwise its most likely your sponsorship deck will most likely wind up in file 13 (otherwise known as the waste basket).

We do assist race teams with putting together sponsorship decks which are a critical tool in the great money hunt. Simply drop me an email at jverdegan2@gmail.com and let’s get those conversations started.
