AVILA ACES EAGLE RIVER B MODS – CLAIMS $10K RUMBLE AT THE RIVER
(EAGLE RIVER, WI) AUG. 11 – Boone, Iowa’s Matt Avila continued his penchant for bagging big money B mod specials in Wisconsin.
Avila grabbed the lead at the halfway point, and dodged numerous caution flags to capture the first ever $10,250-to-win ‘Rumble At The River’ before a capacity crowd at Eagle River Speedway Tuesday.
Avila has also won 141 Speedway’s “Captain At The Creek” the past two seasons, pocketing a pair of five-figure jackpots in the process.
Avila started eighth in the 25 car field, and through a flurry of cautions in the first five of the contest, had worked his way into the top five. Michigander Marcus Dunbar wrestled the lead away from Luxemburg’s Jared Siefert in the early laps, with Iowan Jake Sachau storming into the top spot on a lap six restart.
It was on a lap 22 restart where Avila, using the bottom groove, launched a slider, taking the lead from Sachau. The pair of Iowans would swap the lead from the race’s midway point. It was on a restart with 13 circuits to go where Avila assumed the lead, and continued to build a comfortable five-to-six car length advantage over Sachau. The high number of cautions kept lapped traffic at a minimum, and Avila was able to cruise to victory to collect the five-figure payday.
Sachau, who captured one of the qualifying features on Monday night, took second. Siefert settled for third. Greenville’s Shane Bahr, and Escanaba, Michigan’s Jesse Denome rounded out the top five finishers.
The contest took a toll on the competitors, as just 12 of the 25 cars that took the green were still on the track to take the checkers. “I’m really liking coming to Wisconsin and winning these big paying races,” Avila said in victory lane. “Honestly, I wish we would have had all those cautions. I’m pretty sure Jake (Sachau) and I could have kept putting on a really great show for the fans. This is an awesome track you guys have up here.”
The B Mod special showcased a trio of different sanctioning bodies, with IMCA-type B modifieds claiming the top five positions. Drivers from seven states and Canada made up the stout field of 57 B modifieds.
Oconto Falls’ Kyle Frederick made a last minute decision to race pay off. The veteran IMCA stock car pilot jumped into the lead from his pole position and fought off a stiff challenge from Rod Snellenberger and Cole Czarneski to capture the division’s feature. Snellenberger and Czarneski took the remaining two podium spots, with Mitch Stankowski and Jason Zdroik finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.
Hometown driver Quentin “Iceman” Morrison survived heavy pressure from Laona’s Jack Brickner and emerged triumphant in the street stock feature. The victory was Morrison’s first here of the year.
Three Lakes’ Nick Allard slipped past Brickner to score the runnerup spot at the checkers. Brickner, Jason Eisel and Josh Joslin finished third through fifth, respectively.
Michigan’s Addison Dishaw led wire-to-wire in the caution free, 12-lap 300 micro sprint feature. The victory was her third of the season here.

Racing resumes next Tuesday, August 18. The annual “Back To School” backpack night will take place. All kids 12 and under will receive a backpack chock full of school supplies.
