“The Flyin’ Grandma” Kim Brown of Eagle River points to her rear spoiler saying at Eagle River Speedway.

A busy holiday weekend has passed, and Mother Nature wasn’t very nice to race fans and drivers during this celebration of our nation’s 250th birthday.

Among the area shows that were “weathered” out in the region were:

141 Speedway (July 1)
Luxy Raceway (July 2)
Wisconsin International Raceway (July 2)
Plymouth Dirt Track (July 2)
Gravity Park USA (July 3)
Outagamie Speedway (July 3)
Norway Speedway (July 3)
Dells Raceway Park (July 4)

With the huge amount of risk on the table, not to mention the potential of many other fireworks events and other festivals to celebrate our country’s 250th anniversary, I guess I too, as a promoter would think twice about opening the gates and taking on a huge financial risk.

A PERFECT FIT – Sometimes, a certain traveling circuit or series can wind up being darn near the ‘perfect fit.’ I think it’s safe to say the Midwest Sprint Association (MSA) sprint cars are that perfect fit at Eagle River Speedway.

On Saturday, former World of Outlaw regular “Big Wheel” Scotty Thiel, wheeling a Randy Sippel-owned racer, went wire-to-wire, winning the caution free feature race. In fact, this posted the third straight year that the MSA sprint feature went green-to-checkered without a caution.

And I’ve talked about drivers earning their first career feature flags, too, and what an honor it is as an announcer to call those races. We had that happen at Eagle River Saturday, too. And it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. Wyoming, Minnesota’s Pat Kelley picked up the USRA late model victory.

Kelley has sort of morphed into the “ambassador” of the division, keeping teams in Wisconsin and Minnesota up-to-date on where and when the division will be racing. Not an easy task in this day and age of fickle racers. Kelley made his journey to Wisconsin where he raced Friday up at ABC in Ashland Thursday night. He stuck around in the area, and stayed in Eagle River Friday night. It’s often tough to see that type of dedication these days. Thanks Pat!

Promoters Pat and Patty Zdroik had smiles at the end of the night, and well deserved smiles. For the first time in several weeks, the track promoters didn’t have the threat of rain looming over them on race day. The full grandstands on Saturday night showed. Our support classes were low on numbers, for a number of different factors. But, with 22 MSA sprinters, it was a great show and brought many new faces in the grandstand.

WAYNE ROFFERS MEMORIAL RACE – The biggest paying late model race in track history will take place Friday, July 10 at Outagamie Speedway in Seymour. The first ever Wayne Roffers Memorial race is set to take place. The event honors a former racer and big backer of the racing program in Seymour throughout the decades.

A $5,000 top prize is on the line. The track will utilize the track’s regular Dirt Kings-style rules package that it utilizes for it’s semi-weekly late model races. The other divisions in action will race for a boosted payout. The action at the Outagamie County Fairgrounds is set to commence at 6:30 p.m.

141 SPEEDWAY – After being off on July 4, Saturday night racing returns to 141 Speedway in Francis Creek Saturday, July 11. It’s Fast & Fun Toy & Hobby night at the races. IMCA stock cars will battle for a $1,000 top prize for the Red, White & Blue series. The action gets underway at the Francis Creek oval at 6 p.m.

THE HILL RACEWAY – The Hill Raceway in Sturgeon Bay roars back into action on Saturday, July 11 with the Therma Trop X Night at the raceway. Street stocks will scrap in the Busch Shootout. Sportmods, stock cars and four cylinders will also be in action. Racing gets underway at 6 p.m. at John Miles Park.

EAGLE RIVER SPEEDWAY IMCA STOCK CARS – The IMCA stock cars will be in the spotlight Tuesday, June 7 at Eagle River Speedway. The track is presenting a “meatier-in-the-middle” payout, dropping a little bit off the top prize, and spreading it out from positions 2 through 7. Many drivers opine that most of the racing in any given feature takes place from 2nd or 3rd through 7th or 8th. A full program is on tap at the Northwoods oval. The hammer drops at 7 p.m.

HALL OF FAME NIGHTS – Shawano Speedway will host it’s Hall of Fame night Saturday, July 11. The inductees are Willard and LeeRoy Raddant of Shawano, and De Pere’s Mike Schmelzer. Plymouth Dirt Track will also host HOF night July 11. The PDTR inductees include the entire Sippel family (Tom, Randy & Scott), John “Ripple” Born. Gib Wiser, and track workers Dave Bohrmueller, Dale Baumann, Kim Baumann, Brian Triphan, Brian Gilles, Terry Marten and Lanny Schirmer. Also a 53 lap feature paying $1,053 will be run for grand nationals. The race will be the Scott Weiss Memorial race. The event honors the former racer who recently passed away.

LUXEMBURG ON SUNDAY – Luxy Raceway in Luxemburg will run on Sunday, July 12 in a non-points race at the Kewaunee County Fairgrounds. Gravity Park USA will attempt to race again on Friday, July 10 after raining out July 3.

KARTING KORNER – Sunday afternoon kart racing returns to Little Buckaroo Jr. Motorsports Park on Sunday, July 12. Danielson Racing is sponsoring the bike giveaway for the kids. Action at the Cecil karting oval is set to commence at 2 p.m.

GSR Kartway will host it’s weekly lawn mower and kart races Wednesday, July 8. The first green flag at the Clintonville oval is scheduled to fly at 7 p.m.

RIP TOM POSTL – The short track racing family continues to take hits on an almost weekly basis. The local dirt late model community recently lost another great guy in Tom Postl. Tom succumbed to a short battle with cancer. Tom was a longtime crew member of M.J. McBride, a career that dated back to M.J.’s USAC stock car days in the early-to-mid-1970’s.

Tom’s son Lukas Postl took over running M.J.’s number 5 when he started late model racing years ago. I got to really know Tom after I wrote the “5-10-32” book that featured M.J., Pete Parker & Terry Anvelink in 2021. Tom was a good guy, a straight shooter who will be missed.

PAVEMENT PONDERINGS – TUNDRA super late model series officials and Dells Raceway Park are trying to find a raindate for the washed out, July 4 Great American Cup Race. The “Red Race” that was rained out at Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna July 2 will be run this Thursday, July 9. A full, “Thursday Night Thunder” program presented by the Fox River Racing Club is scheduled to kick off at 6:30 p.m.

The ASA Midwest Tour will swing into Iowa at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids, Iowa Saturday, July 11. Four support classes are also on tap, with hot laps scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and racing to follow. Remember to get out and support your local short track IN PERSON whenever possible. NOTHING beats BEING THERE!
