SACHAU, BAHR EARN EAGLE RIVER SPEEDWAY ‘RUMBLE AT THE RIVER’ B MOD QUALIFIERS
(EAGLE RIVER, WI) AUG. 10– Manning, Iowa’s Jake Sachau punched his ticket into the $10,250 ‘Rumble At The River’ at Eagle River Speedway Monday by capturing a 25-lap qualifying feature win.
Sachau grabbed the lead on a lap thirteen restart and dodged a pair late late race cautions to capture the first, 25 lap B mod feature.
The Iowan started third on the grid, and immediately marched to second at the drop of the green. Polesitter Nick Koehler paced the opening thirteen circuits of the contest. Sachau stormed into the lead when racing resumed, with De Pere’s Chris “Dr. Love” Chris Budzban hugging the bottom groove in the second spot. Sachau committed to the high line the rest of the way, and hung on for victory.
Budzban took second, followed by Escanaba, Michigan’s Jesse Denome, Koehler and Boone, Iowa’s Matt Avila, who charged through the field from 18th to nab the fifth and final transfer spot into Tuesday night’s big show.
In the other qualifier, Minnesotan Harley Dais jumped out to the early lead, with fellow front row starter Harshbarger going door-to-door with Dais for several laps. Chippewa Falls Michael Truscott joined the chase, and grabbed the lead on lap four. An Owen Wilcox spin on lap five tightened the field, and on the restart, Truscott kept the lead, running the high line, with Harshbarger a close second hugging the inner groove.
The pair would go on the trade the lead for the next several circuits. A late caution on lap 23 set up a two-lap dash to the finish. Greenville’s Shane Bahr, who had been lurking in the top three the last 12 laps, gave Harshbarger a late surge, but the Fond Du Lac driver crossed the line first. Bahr claimed second, followed by Truscott, Marcus Dunbar and Jared Siefert, who stormed through the field from 16th to earn the fifth and final transfer spot into the big dance.
However, Harshbarger’s car failed to pass post race tech, awarding the win to Bahr. And, the sixth place finisher across the stripe, Winona, Minnesota’s Harley Dais, bumping up into fifth and qualifying into the big show.
Wausau’s Mitch Stankowski passed Kyle Frederick for the lead on lap seven, and survived heavy pressure from Frederick, Rod Snellenberger and Jason Zdroik the balance of the contest to win the IMCA stock car feature. The victory was Stankowski’s second of the season here.
Stankowski sweated out a handful of caution periods along the way, and kept all challengers at bay after a restart with six circuits remaining. Frederick settled for second. Snellenberger sliced his way through the pack from 19th to place third. Zdroik and Jeff Bodendorfer rounded out the top five finishers.
Another full program is on tap for Tuesday, August 11. Another round of qualifying heats and last chance races will take place to fill the remainder of the 24 spots for the 50-lap feature field.
