FOURTH-GENERATION RACER LEMIEUX AMONG STURGEON BAY WINNERS
(submitted by Joe Orsini)
(STURGEON BAY, WI) – Fourth generation racer Caden LeMieux of Sturgeon Bay kept the family name rolling in the record books with his stock car feature win at The Hill Raceway in Sturgeon Bay Saturday night.
Other feature winners included street stock point leader Ed Anschutz of Two Rivers (street stock), Hometown racer Cody Rass (sportmod) and Cleveland’s Scott Schlafke (bomber).
72 cars across 4 divisions rolled into John Miles Park in Sturgeon Bay for the fifth points night of the 2023 season.  Opening ceremonies included a tribute to hall of fame member, Brad Anderegg, who passed away nine years ago to the day.  The Bouche and Sell racing stables, paid tribute to their lost racing friend during the national anthem.  Numerous cars also came out for the balloon release honoring the memory of Bradley Jordan.
The Stock Car feature kicked off with Lemieux wrestling away the lead from pole sitter Brady Polcen on the opening lap.  While Lemieux secured the top spot Dan Sell Sr. and Troy Muench fell into a door to door battle for second with Sell running the low line and Muench working the high side.  Muench eventually locked down the runner up the runner up spot and put pressure on the young Lemieux.
At the halfway mark Muench continued to hound the back bumper of Lemieux while Brett Wenzel moved from 9th to 3rd, Sell held down 4th,and Dave “The Bulldozer” Bouche 5th.  Lemieux looked like a seasoned veteran as he held off every charge from Muench over the final 10 circuits and captured his first career win at The Hill Raceway.  Muench had to settle for 2nd, Wenzel was 3rd, Bouche grabbed 4th in a late race pass, and Dan Sell Jr. completed the top five.
“Grandpa” Dennis Miesler took advantage of his front row starting spot to pace the opening laps of the Northern Sport Mod A-main event.  Miesler faced immediate pressure from Coy Vlies as the youngster put his 17V machine to the bottom groove and tried to snatch the lead away from Miesler.
An early caution with 6 laps in the books slowed the pace of the race and the scoring showed Miesler in the lead followed by Vlies, Alec Wery, Rass, and Craig Dorner.  Vlies’ A game was on full display for the restart as he muscled into the top spot.  Vlies looked comfortable out front until caution flew again at lap 10 with Rass, Randy LeMieux Jr., Dorner, and Wery falling into line for the restart behind Vlies.
When the green flew again Vlies and Rass fell into a multi lap, door to door battle for the lead with Vlies running low and Rass utilizing the momentum of the higher groove.  As laps ticked off Rass was able to find the grip needed on the high side to complete the pass and grab the checkered flag.  Vlies held on for 2nd, LeMieux was 3rd, Jeff “Pepe” Vlies charged to 4th, and Dorner rounded out the top five.
The Unified Dirt Street Stock feature race proved to be worth the price of admission all on its own.  Devin Yaeger grabbed the early lead and looked stout at the head of the field until his racer drifted high into turn one on lap four.  Yaeger made contact with the wall and, though able to continue, lost multiple spots.  Yaeger’s misfortune proved to be a boon for Steve Georgenson.  Georgenson, who has had his own share of misfortune this season, found lady luck on his shoulder for a brief time as he grabbed the top spot.  Shannon Guelette nosed to the inside of Georgenson and the battle was on for the lead.  While that pair sliced and diced for the top spot they were quickly joined by “The Muscles From Brussels” Garrett Geyer and Tyler Fox.  Those four battled door to door, nose to tail for the lead until caution on lap 7 slowed the race.
The restart saw Geyer, Georgenson, and Guelette go three wide for the lead with Geyer running the top side to secure the position.  Georgenson’s luck once again turned for the worse as his 52 car came up gimpy and he retired from competition on the backstretch.  Meanwhile, points leader, Anschutz, was climbing steadily through the field and worked past Guelette into 2nd.
Anschutz was able to snatch the top spot away from Geyer shortly after and looked to soar to victory.  The yellow flag flew on lap 17 as Geyer went around in turn 2 as the result of caution.  Geyer was able to refire his car but his powerplant was running hot and he elected to retire from the event and live to race another day.
The restart had Anschutz lead Guelette, Fox, Racin’ Jason Geyer, and Ford Malvitz back to speed.  Anschutz held on for the win while the action unfolded behind him as Fox cleared Guelette to grab 2nd, Guelette settled for 3rd, Malvitz squeezed by Geyer for 4th, and the elder Geyer was content with 5th.
The Bomber division closed out the night with their exciting brand of racing action.  2nd place point runner, Carl King led the opening lap but point leader, Schlafke, wheeled into the top spot on lap 2.  Schlafke never looked back and led the rest of the way to secure his 3rd victory of the year.  King was second, first year driver Branden Schirpke was 3rd, and Eugene Winkel came home 4th.
The Sport Mod Busch Shootout was postponed due to rain beginning to fall after the Bomber feature.  Details for the rescheduling of the event and Sport Mod driver introduction will be announced.
The Hill Raceway, located at John Miles Park in Sturgeon Bay, will be back in action in two weeks on Saturday, August 5th with Hall of Fame Night.  The 2023 class, consisting of drivers Aaron “The Hammer” Thornton, “Mad” Matt Junio, and long time track promoter Woody Wodack, will be enshrined at intermission  Racing starts at 6:00 PM with adult grandstand admission being just $10 with children 12 and under free with adult admission.
