ANSCHUTZ SCORES WIN NO. 88 – DORNER, SCHLAFKE, REINHARDT & KING ALSO FIND VICTORY LANE AT THE HILL
By Joe Orsini
(Sturgeon Bay, WI June 16) – Mother Nature was thwarted as she attempted to stop the races in Door County for the third consecutive time. 83 cars across 5 divisions checked in to battle for victory at The Hill Raceway for the TTX Night at the Races. The event began by paying tribute to Mike King Sr. and ended with two emotional visits to victory lane for the driver of the #1 Unified Dirt Grand National.
Uncle Tony Bouche scored a popular heat race win early in the night and grabbed the opening lap lead of the Stock Car feature event. While Bouche tried to walk away from the field the class too tough to tame lived up to it’s namesake as Zach Spangenberg, Dan Sell Jr., and Caden Lemieux quickly fell into a three wide battle for fourth. The young gun, Lemieux, drove away from that scrum with 4th and then into 3rd by lap 4. While the pack jockeyed for position Scott Reinhardt was hot on the bumper of Bouche as the pair battled for the top spot. Lemieux’s pursuit of the lead duo was cut short as Sell snuck by into 3rd. Reinhardt was able to muscle by Bouche into 1st on lap 7 and held the point until caution flew on lap 11. The restart saw Reinhardt lead Sell, Brett Wenzel, Bouche, and Lemieux back to racing speeds. Sell looked inside Reinhardt and tried to gain the advantage on the lower groove but Reinhardt was not to be denied and found the momentum on the middle line to regain the point. At the checkers Reinhardt locked up the win, Sell settled for 2nd, Wenzel 3rd, Spangenberg 4th, and Bill Lemieux came home 5th after charging from his 18th starting spot.
The Northern Sportmod A main event saw “The Ironman” Bernie Reinhardt grab the lead from the front row at the drop of the green. An early caution on lap four reshuffled the deck as Reinhardt lead Geno Sternard, Roger Laviolette, Gary Henkel, and Alec Wery when the yellow flew. Opening night winner, Craig Dorner, took full advantage of the restart to shoot down the inside line to 3rd. By lap 6 Dorner had nabbed the lead from Reinhardt. Alec Wery gave a heated chase and on lap 10 went from 4th to 2nd getting by both Laviolette and Reinhardt. Dorner survived numerous restarts to capture his second win in as many nights of racing. Wery came home 2nd, “Pepe” Jeff Vlies secured a hard fought 3rd, Brayden Lemieux completed a strong run after starting 14th, and Laviolette rounded out the top 5.
Defending 2023 Unified Dirt Street Stock champ, Eddie “The Eagle” Anschutz, had been fighting a run of bad luck early this season that included an early exit from the opening night feature. The silver lining in that was the point average invert gave him the outside front row starting spot for the feature event. Anschutz needed no other advantage than that as he rocketed to the lead on the opening lap and never looked back. When the double checkered flags flew Anschutz notched his first win of the season, John Denil Jr. capped a strong night with 2nd, Chad Naze was 3rd, Tony Everard 4th, and Racin’ Jason Geyer completed the top 5.
Scott Schlafke sought to double up after winning opening night but had a stout field of cars to compete with. Schlafke appeared unpressured as he grabbed the early lead and did not look back. As the 4 Cylinder feature came to a close Schlafke was able to grab the win. Nathan Lemay came out on top of a race long battle with Nick Everard to secure 2nd, Everard settled for 3rd, Trever Cronick was 4th, and Kenneth Becker had a solid 5th place finish.
The Unified Dirt Grand Nationals made their first appearance at the track since the 2008 season. The initial battle for the lead proved to be worth the wait as Derek Schrauth and Mike King Jr. completed the first five laps door to door just like they started the event. King eventually pulled away and hung on to capture the emotional victory. Schrauth hung on for 2nd, Jake Richards was 3rd, Jeff Muehlbauer 4th, and Brian Schrauth closed out the top 5.
The Hill Raceway is back in action next Saturday, June 22nd, for the T. Simon Jewelers Night at the races. The vintage mods will be on hand for their second appearance of the 2024 season and the night will cap off with the Street Stock Busch Shootout. Racing starts a 6:00 and grandstand admission remains at an inflation busting 10 dollars!
