DEBOUCHE, SELL, PLATE, VAN PAY & SCHLAFKE RULE STURGEON BAY ACTION (submitted by Joe Orsini)
(STURGEON BAY, WI) JULY 8 – With dark skies threatening throughout the evening Mother Nature was defeated as the show got in.  Christmas in July got off to a delayed start due to light rain just prior to the green flag dropping but thanks to the drivers that came out to pack, the show was able to start within a half hour of schedule.  A second sprinkle during the Stock Car A-main caused a second rain delay but thanks to the Stock Car and Sport Mods Drivers the track was packed while the rain fell and the track was not lost to the elements.
The Unified Dirt Street Stock A-main event was the first of the evening and provided more sparks than any left over 4th of July fireworks possibly could have.  Dan “The Mullet” Van Pay took full advantage of his front row starting spot to claim the lead on the opening lap.  Steve Georgenson quickly slid his war wagon into 2nd while “The Hammer” Dave DeGrave moved to 3rd.  Caution flew early when the field slowed with 5 laps complete.  The on track action resulted in the top two point runners, Eddie “The Eagle” Anschutz and Racin’ Jason Geyer headed down pit lane to the service of their respective crews.
The restart would see Van Pay lead Georgenson, DeGrave, and a hard working Bailey Laviolette back to racing speeds.  While Anschutz and Geyer were able to rejoin the field they would be mired at the back of the pack.  Van Pay took control of the race once again while Georgenson gave chase until his 52 machine expired in a puff of smoke on lap 9.
A late restart with three laps to go saw Van Pay continuing to keep the wolves at bay as he led “The Muscles From Brussels” Garrett Geyer, DeGrave, Ford Malvitz, and Jason Geyer back to speed.  The final three laps proved to be a knock down, drag out street fight that Van Pay was able to win.  DeGrave settled for 2nd, Anschutz 3rd, Malvitz 4th, and Garrett Geyer completed the top 5.
The Stock Car feature event provided excitement that was too tough to tame, even for Mother Nature.  Dan Sell wrestled command of the field at the drop of the green.  Troy Muench quickly piloted his 52 car to 2nd while Zach Spangenberg locked up 3rd until he was collected in a lap 6 caution that would end his night.  The restart had Sell lead Muench, Caden Lemieux, and Brett Wenzel back to green flag conditions.  Muench harassed Sell for the top spot until his iron chariot came up gimpy on lap 11 and he pulled off just past half way.  Sell would hold on to capture the win, Lemieux grabbed 2nd, Wenzel 3rd, Dan Sell Jr. 4th, and Nathan Otto closed out the top 5.
The Sport Mod A-main kicked off with John Koessl leading the opening lap but Michael Plate Sr. worked inside of Koessl to the top spot before Koessl lost the handle on his 59 car and went into the spin cycle in turn two.  Plate held court on the restart over Gary Henkel, “The Iron Man” Bernie Reinhardt, and Coy Vlies.
As laps clicked off Plate continued to lead while Randy LeMieux Jr. and Craig Dorner wound through the pack to trade 2nd place back and forth like a game of hot potato.  When the checkers flew Plate held on for the win, Dorner secured 2nd, LeMieux 3rd, Vlies 4th, and Reinhardt rounded out the top 5.
The Modifieds were on hand for their first appearance of the summer.  Tyler DeBouche led the opening lap and never looked back.  Brekken Kleinschmidt staged a race long battle with “The Birdman” Chris Pigeon for second with Pigeon working low while Kleinschmidt ran high.  When the checkers waved it was DeBouche claiming the top prize while Kleinschmidt took 2nd, and Pigeon was 3rd.
The Bomber division closed out the night with their exciting brand of racing action.  Point leader Scott Schlafke took control of the event from the start and faced intermittent pressure from Carl King over the course of the race but was able to lead green to checkers.  Robert Skipon came home 3rd.
The Hill Raceway, located at John Miles Park in Sturgeon Bay, will be back in action in two weeks on Saturday, July 22nd featuring driver introduction and the Busch Shootout for the Sport Mods.  Racing starts at 6:00 PM with adult grandstand admission being just $10 with children 12 and under free with adult admission.
