CZARNESKI CHARGES FROM 10TH TO 1ST IN 141 IMCA MOD SCRUM
(FRANCIS CREEK, WI) May 9 – Denmark’s Cole Czarneski charged from his 10th starting spot and passed early race leader Race Van Pay for the top spot, and went on to capture the caution-free, 25-lap IMCA modified feature at 141 Speedway in Francis Creek Saturday.
Van Pay sprinted from his pole position into the lead at the drop of the green of the 25 lap contest. Czarneski began picking cars off lap-by-lap, marching up to second by lap seven. Czarneski began reeling in Van Pay, who was enjoying a five car length advantage up front.
Czarneski motored around past Van Pay into the lead at the contest’s halfway point. Meanwhile, Mike Mullen, who started 14th on the grid, had also successfully sliced his way through traffic, storming into 2nd with ten laps remaining.
Mullen kept Czarneski within striking distance, and really began closing the gap when Czarneski sifted through lapped traffic in the waning laps. Czarneski fended off Mullen’s late race surge to score the win, which went green-to-checkered without a yellow. Mullen took second, with Mullen’s dad Brian Mullen taking third. Former track champion Johnny Whitman and Van Pay rounded out the top finishers.
Beaver Dam’s Brandon Schmitt scored the IMCA stock car feature win.
Schmitt dashed from his outside, front row starting spot and traded paint with polesitter Shannon Guelette in the early going. A lap seven caution tightened the field, and when racing resumed, Todd Augustain and Nick Buckarma marched into the second and third spots, respectively. The duo hounded Schmitt as the race wore on, but Schmitt emerged triumphant when the checkers flew. Augustain, Buckarma, last week’s winner Luke Lemmens and Guelette finished second through fifth, respectively.
Fond Du Lac’s Brady Harshbarger passed Beaver Dam’s Derek Fehling for the lead on lap seven and was never headed again, as Harshbarger picked up the $1,000-to-win IMCA northern sportmod win. The event went caution-free.
Fehling, who started on the pole, took runnerup money. Last week’s winner Coy Vlies took third, followed by Ryan Schmidt and Cole Thomas.
New Franken’s Derek Moede came out on top of a thrilling, street stock main where he traded paint and the lead with Paul Diefenthaler throughout the contest. Montello’s Jeff Richards and Black Creek’s Jake Peters scored feature wins in the grand national and IMCA sport compact classes, respectively.
Four of the six division’s features went caution-free without a yellow. 161 drivers from four states took part in the racing program.
Racing resumes Saturday night, May 16 at 6:00 p.m. 141 is hosting the CJ Joski Memorial Race. The band Tailgate County will provide entertainment in the Left Turn Lounge following the races. For more information check out our website outagamiespeedway.com or check out our Facebook page.
