CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS – TRACKING THE WINNERS AT STURGEON BAY

When it comes to winning races at The Hill in Sturgeon Bay Algoma’s Todd “Felix” Dart stands atop as the “King Of The Hill.”

Heading into 2022 Dart has scored a total of 60 feature wins since the track reopened in 1993 – leading all drivers. Dart’s buddy “Chargin’ Charlie Kroll of Forestville sits in second with all time victories with 51 and Union’s Troy Muench third with 42 wins.

Rounding out the top ten are Eugene Gregorich (41), Billy LeMieux (39), Benji LaCrosse (37), Aaron Thornton and Dave “The Hammer” De Grave (32), Jeremy Wiitala (31) and Dave “The Bulldozer” Bouche (31).

Many drivers in the top 25 still continue to race into 2022 – but the landscape has most definitely changed. Dart runs weekly at 141 Speedway in Francis Creek where he’s a past champion and the modified class hosts three races annually.

And races no longer are run weekly at the track dubbed “The Circle Of Death” as an abbreviated schedule is what’s needed to keep the lights on and the track open these days. Both Kroll and Muench still race in the IMCA stock car class. With Gregorich having not raced much in recent years odds are strong for LeMieux to possibly climb in the charts while DeGrave and Bouche both plan full campaigns in Sturgeon Bay in ’22.

Thanks are in order for veteran track announcer and track historian Tom Wagner who has kept meticulous statistics on racing at the Sturgeon Bay oval since it reopened in 1993. A total of 312 drivers have scored feature wins in multiple divisions at the track since ’93.
