BIG $$$ WEEK FOR SPORTMODS – REGIONAL DIRT FEATURE TOTALS & MORE
Posted on: Monday August 12, 2024
This time of year is where the sportmod drivers have a chance to battle for the big bucks.
It started last Friday night at Outagamie Speedway in Seymour, continued with a big money race Sunday night in Luxemburg and will wrap up this week with the annual $10,000-to-win Captain VI this week Monday thru Wednesday August 12-14 at 141 Speedway in Francis Creek. Many of the top sportmod drivers from not only Wisconsin but Iowa and other states will converge at the Francis Creek oval for the big shindig.
Practice will be held Monday from 7 p.m. til dusk where admission is free to watch for fans. Tuesday night qualifying races for the sportmods will be held along with full programs for IMCA modifieds and grand nationals. Wednesday night last chance qualifiers in the sportmods will be held along with full programs for the IMCA stock cars and Unified dirt street stocks. Racing is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. both Tuesday and Wednesday nights, respectively.
Check the 141 Speedway Facebook page for updates here during the week. Also a reminder that there will be no racing at 141 Speedway this Saturday, August 17. Racing action will resume at the Francis Creek oval Saturday, August 24 for season championship night.
R.M. Van Pay returned to victory lane Saturday night at 141 but it wasn’t in his familiar No. 00 IMCA modified. ‘Buck’ picked up an IMCA stock car feature win in the Joe Kerkhoff owned 65 car. Meanwhile Mike Mullen won the Dirt Kings late model race at Angell Park Speedway Sunday night.
MUELLER CLINCHES – Random Lake’s Brad “JJ” Mueller scored the Super Six Late Model Series title at Plymouth Dirt Track. Navarino’s Nick Anvelink picked up the late model feature win at PDTR and that victory was worth $5,000 for the second-generation Bonduel racer. Friday night Mueller also won the late model feature at Gravity Park USA in Chilton.
WAGNER PASSES – A celebration of the life of Roger “Bucky” Wagner is scheduled to take place Tuesday, August 20 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Peace United Church of Christ in Manitowoc. Wagner passed away last week at the age of 93. Wagner was a racing champion at 141 Speedway in Francis Creek and the track at Apple Creek and was a standout during the popular coupe era in the 1960’s. Bucky was featured in my 2015 release “Life In The Past Lane – a history of stock car racing in northeastern Wisconsin from 1950-1980” and accompanied me at the past couple of Pedal Down Promotions book signing. A great guy who will truly be missed.
BY THE NUMBERS – $1,050 was the amount of prize money taken home by Clintonville’s Max Oreskovich when he won the IMCA northern sportmod feature at Outagamie Speedway in Seymour Friday. 38 is the number of different sportmod drivers who’ve scored feature wins in the region as of Sunday. 60 is the number of career sanctioned IMCA modified victories Shawn Kilgore has claimed after his 141 win Saturday while Wausau’s Marcus Yarie claimed IMCA mod win number 63 at Shawano Speedway Saturday. 12 is the number of feature wins Cole Czarneski earned so far this year. 9 of those victories came in a modified and the other 3 Cole won driving an IMCA stock car.
27 is the number of super stocks that entered the Stan The Man race at WIR in Kaukauna Thursday night. $1,049 is the amount that race winner Trevor Howard pocketed by winning that event.
STURGEON BAY FAIR RACE – You can catch racing action this Thursday night August 15 in Sturgeon Bay and even enjoy a funnel cake along the way. Races during the Door County Fair take place Thursday night at John Miles Park in Sturgeon Bay at The Hill Raceway. The grand national division will join the track’s regular weekly classes. A 6 p.m. start time is slated for The Hill during this Thursday nights mid-week special event.
LATE MODELS BACK @ OUTAGAMIE – Late models will be on the card at Outagamie Speedway in Seymour Friday, August 16. The popular class will join the track’s regular divisions with the action getting underway at the Outagamie County Fairgrounds third-mile, clay oval at 6:30 p.m. Yours truly will be on the mic.
PAVEMENT PONDERINGS – Longtime Roger “The Bear” Regeth and Rod Wheeler crew chief Geno Weber will be inducted into the ‘Circle of Fame’ this Thursday night August 15 at Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna. It will be the “Blue Race” with the first green flag flying at 6:30 p.m. Appleton’s Brandon Reichenberger placed 20th driving for Dan Devine in the Badger State 125 ‘Alive For Five’ series race at Dells Raceway Park Saturday August 10. The race was won by Wausau’s Luke Fenhaus. On Friday August 9 Neenah’s Braison Bennett placed seventh in the super late model feature at Golden Sands Speedway in Plover. Wisconsin Rapids Colin Reffner picked up the win.
KARTING KORNER – A kids coin toss will take place at intermission Friday, August 16 at Little Buckaroo Jr. Motorsports Park in Cecil. Racing action at the eighth-mile, clay oval is set to commence at 7 p.m. Meanwhile action resumes this Wednesday, August 14 at GSR Kartway in Clintonville. Lawn mower and karting racing action is set to get underway at 7 p.m.
Both of these tracks provide ample chances for youngsters to rent karts to see if it’s something they’d enjoy. For GSR call 920 915 1471. If you’re interested in renting a kart at Little Buckaroo you can call 920 265 4056. Kaleb Moeller photo
Remember to get out and support your favorite short track in person whenever possible! The number of weeks of racing in our region is beginning to dwindle and fall will be here sooner than you think!
