GO AFTER THE OTHER TEAM SPONSOR’S COMPETITION by Joe Verdegan
(August, 2026 MONTHLY MOTORSPORTS MARKETING MAIL TIP)
I often cringe when I discover that lazy race teams seek out businesses that are already backing another racing team or teams.
To me, it’s a lazy move. That thought process alone tells me that the team seeking out an a business that’s already in the sport is being VERY lazy. It truly reeks of an attitude of “just-cut-me-the-check” without any true consideration of what the potential marketing partners needs are.
How hard is it to seek out a competing business to the ones that are already on board with another team? For decades, at Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna, Wisconsin for example, there was always a Budweiser-sponsored late model as well as a Miller-sponsored late model.
The beer companies have long gotten out of the full-blown, sponsorship of any race teams. At most levels, anyways. Selling sponsorships is exactly like racing – timing is everything. I’ve always felt that most of the time, businesses really have no clue about what a great deal motorsports marketing truly is. I’d dare to say there isn’t a better ‘outside-the-box’ form of advertising around.
So don’t be lazy! Solicit some potential NEW businesses to partner with. It’s not much different than asking a woman out if she’s already married, or has a boyfriend.
I can’t stress this enough. If you’re NOT well-versed in things like spelling and grammar, find someone who is. That person or persons can assist you in putting together a colorful, eye-catching sponsorship deck.
We do assist race teams with putting together sponsorship decks, which are a critical tool in the great money hunt. Simply drop me an email at jverdegan2@gmail.com and let’s get those conversations started.
