IOWANS STEAL THE LOOT IN WISCONSIN’S HIGH-DOLLAR B MODIFIED SHOWS

A pair of high-dollar races took place for B modifieds in Wisconsin this weekend.

And, when the dust settled, it was a pair of Iowans who made off like bandits, each pocketing a pair of five-figure paydays.

It started earlier in the week up north at Eagle River Speedway. The northwoods oval hosted the first ever “Rumble At The River” for B modifieds. The track’s weekly, Tuesday night show features a trio of different sanctioning bodies for this division: IMCA sportmods, WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds and USRA B modifieds.

57 cars turned out for the two-day show. There was apprehension by some in N.E. Wisconsin that the IMCA cars could in no way, shape or form “hang with” the WISSOTA or USRA-type cars.

When the dust settled, we discovered nothing could be further from the truth. Drivers wheeling IMCA-style cars nabbed the top five finishing spots. It was the first time ERS hosted a race of this magnitude.

Boone’s Matt Avila took home the $10,250 check. The race did have a number of cautions. Full disclosure. There is always room for improvement when you roll the dice, and put on a high-risk show of this nature.

All competitors, despite the three different sanctioning bodies, all had to run the G-60 tire. That proved to be somewhat of an equalizer of sorts. A few WISSOTA drivers opted not to run this event, because they weren’t allowed to run “their” sanction’s regular tires. The drivers that compete weekly at ERS already run the G-60, and it’s a common thing for them.

One issue that popped up on social media was some fans being somewhat upset that the Rumble At The River wasn’t streamed online anywhere. Folks, if you’ve read my stuff over the past few years, you know my position on this. Tracks NEED butts in the stands, and Eagle River’s near-capacity crowd proved that you don’t necessarily need to be streaming races.

The argument has been made that maybe a track should stream only bigger events, and shy away from streaming the weekly stuff. In fact, one eastern Wisconsin track promoter has already told me the plan at one track in 2027 will be to ditch streaming any weekly shows, and only stream the big shows.

As for Eagle River, a few rookie hiccups that the track will learn from, I’d call the event a success. What are the chances that in 2027 we see a bigger-paying IMCA stock car special at Eagle RIver? Or even a bigger late model special? Stay tuned.

At 141, it was Oskaloosa, Iowa’s Brayton Carter who took home the $10,000 check on Saturday night, August 14. Out-of-state drivers nabbed all of the top three podium spots, with Casco’s Coy Vlies and Fond Du Lac’s Brady Harshbarger taking fourth and fifth. This 141 show has been around for awhile, and has traditionally drawn a good number of out-of-state racers for this big event. 61 IMCA, card-carrying sportmod drivers took part in the two-day deal in Francis Creek.

We had a scary-looking deal on Friday night during Dirt King late model hot laps at Outagamie Speedway in Seymour. Todd Frank’s racer hit a rut going into turn one, and executed a series of violent flips before coming to rest on his lid on the turn one retaining wall.

Frank was successfully extricated from his battered machine. He walked out under his own power. I’ve been attending races or announing them at Seymour since the early 1970’s. It was one of the worst wrecks I have witnessed there over the years. Glad to see he was o.k.
The season is winding down quickly. Whatever you do, Get out and support your local short track IN PERSON whenever possible. NOTHING beats being there.
