ANVELINK GRABS STURGEON BAY DIRT KINGS LATE MODEL 100TH FEATURE

Bonduel’s Nick Anvelink scored the Dirt Kings late model feature win at The Hill Raceway in Sturgeon Bay August 15.

ANVELINK ACES STURGEON BAY DIRT KINGS 100TH LATE MODEL MAIN by Joe Orsini
(STURGEON BAY, WI) AUG. 15 – 21 WABAM Dirt Kings Touring Late Models signed in for their second ever appearance at the track and celebrating their 100th feature in total, 21 Midwest Dirt Legends Series cars were on hand in their first appearance under that sanctioning banner and second appearance ever for the Legends carsl with the first being all the way back in 2011. 19 Kroll Machine and Fabrication Stock Cars were also on hand to add the class they call too tough to tame action to the fair festivities.
The WABAM Dirt Kings Late Models kicked off the night with qualifying and saw Taylor Scheffler set fast time and a new track record for the series with a 13.960 lap. In the feature Tim Isenberg grabbed the early lead and held the top spot until just past the halfway mark when the leader got bottled up behind lap traffic and Nick Anvelink snuck into the lead. Isenberg also lost spots Jesse Glenz and Mitch Mcgrath as the pair capitalized as well.
Caution flew on lap 38 when Lucas Postl came to a stop against the outside retaining wall in turn one. McGrath took full advantage of the restart to grab second away from Glenz. Two laps later the race stopped under a red flag when Chris Engels slapped the front stretch wall hard enough to knock down a section of the catch fence. The track crew was able to make quick repairs and the race continued with Anvelink still out front.
Caution flew once again at the start of lap 44 as McGrath took a hard hit against the outside wall in turn one while battling with Glenz for second. Anvelink set up shop for the restart with a pair of sevens behind him in Glenz and Joel Bennett on the restart. Anvelink hung on to capture his 32nd career Dirt Kings Late Model Feature win. Glenz won the battle of sevens to finish 2nd, Bennett was third, Paul Parker fourth, and Isenberg fifth.

The Legends Direct Midwest Legends Dirt Series made their first ever appearance a memorable one. Talyn Neuman grabbed the lead at the drop of the green from the outside of the front row. Neuman set a blistering pace and continued to lead at the halfway mark over Dallas Ross, Adam Zellmer, Austin Winkel, and Lincoln Cain. At the checkers Neuman captured his fifth win of the season, Ross held on to second, Cain third, Winkel fourth, and Zellmer capped off the top five.
The Kroll Machine and Fabrication Stock Cars started the night off with their own brand of knock down drag out brawl racing and showed why they are called “The Class Too Tough To Tame”. Caden Lemieux wrestled the lead away from Billy Lemieux on the opening lap and looked to exact revenge on his dad after running second to the elder Lemieux in the heat race. Multiple early cautions before lap 4 slowed the pace but Caden Lemieux continued to set the tone on the point. Once lap 4 was finally completed it saw Tyler Wilson win a three wide battle with Darren Otto and Billy Lemieux to secure the runner up spot.
Once in second Wilson set his sights on reeling in Lemieux at the front. Contact in turn two between Lemieux and Wilson sent Lemieux into the spin cycle and slowed the pace on the speedway once again. Wilson was deemed to cause the caution and Lemieux got his spot back and Wilson reported to the tail of the field. Lemieux held on for the win while Presley Harrington charged from ninth to finish second, Darren Otto came home third, Jeff Kropp fourth, and Billy Lemieux rounded out the top five.
