WENZEL, DEGRAVE, DORNER & SCHALFKE NAB STURGEON BAY CHECKERS by Joe Orsini
(STURGEON BAY, WI) JULY 25 – 63 cars across 4 divisions signed in to battle for wins and points on Kroll Machine and Fabrication night at the races. The action on the track was hot and heavy as drivers were excited to lay claim to one of the custom trophies provided by Ben Kroll for the special night.
The Kroll Machine and Fabrication Stock Car main event opened with Tracy Koontz grabbing the opening lap lead but 6 time defending division champ, Brett Wenzel, shot inside Koontz to grab the top spot on lap 2. At the halfway mark Wenzel continued to hold court over Koontz, Caden Lemieux, Kyle Resch, and Jordan Parma. When the checkers flew Wenzel secured a convincing win, Lemieux grabbed 2nd in the closing laps, Koontz settled for 3rd, Resch 4th, and Tim VanDeHei closed out the top 5.
The Dean Distributing Stock Car Busch Shootout saw Eddie “The Eagle” Anschutz grab the top prize of 180 Busch Lights.
The T. Simon Jewelers Northern Sport Mod feature event saw Gary Henkel pace the opening lap but his time at the front was short lived as Craig Dorner powered by to grab the lead on lap 2. An early caution with 3 laps in restacked the deck and saw point leader, Brayden Lemieux, restart at the back of the field after a trip down pit lane under the yellow flag. Dorner remained in command of the field on the ensuing restart and never looked back as he captured the win. Randy Lemieux Jr. was 2nd, Brayden Lemieux rebounded to finish 3rd, “The Ironman” Bernie Reinardt was 4th, and Tony Gates 5th in his first run at the track this season.
The Millies Pub and Grub Unified Dirt Street Stock main event started with CJ Weckler leading the opening lap. Chad Vetting worked inside Weckler to wrestle away the lead on the 2nd circuit. Vetting set a blistering pace and opened up a comfortable cushion until caution slowed the race with 8 laps complete. Vetting led Corey Haen, “Fast Fox” Tyler Fox, Weckler, and Bailey Laviolette back to racing conditions. When the race slowed again for the yellow flag on lap 14 Vetting continued to lead while Fox had moved into 2nd, point leader Dave “The Hammer” DeGrave was 3rd, Haen 4th, and Laviolette 5th. DeGrave utilized his skills to grab the lead on the restart and the wily division veteran secured his second feature win in a row. Vetting settled for 2nd, Laviolette 3rd, Fox 4th, and Haen capped off a solid night with a 5th place finish.
The Dykesville Bowl 4 Cylinder A-main saw Kyle Walters use the pole position to full advantage as he led the opening lap. Dallas Topel looked to repeat his win from two weeks ago as he piloted into the top spot to lead lap 2 but would surrender that spot to “Spiderman” Scott Schlafke the very next trip around the third mile clay oval. Schlafke was unchallenged over the remainder of the event and salted away the victory. Defending division champ, Chase Ertel, came home 2nd, Topel 3rd, Walters 4th, and Caden Lemieux pulled off a double duty top 5.
The Hill Raceway is back in action next Saturday, August 1st, with our regular program plus the Dean Distributing Busch Shootout for the T. Simon Jewelers Northern Sport Mods. Racing kicks off at 6:00 and adult grandstand admission remains an inflation busting ten dollars!
