Stock car races at any county fair are special for multiple reasons.

First off, it’s one time a year when a track is virtually guaranteed to get some NEW BLOOD in the seats, watching your exciting product.

That’s exactly what took place last Friday night at Outagamie Speedway in Seymour. For a $15 admission into the fair, that included your entrance to the stock car races. And the Dirt Kings late model tour headlined on this particular evening.

There is always an added element of excitement during any fair races. Some tracks don’t have the privilege of hosting a race during the fair. Perhaps it’s the awesome food and drink options available? Or is it the background of the ferris wheel and other rides, lit up, providing the perfect backdrop for the track photographers.

At any rate, Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car hit a home run Friday night. Dirt Kings late models were the headliner. A field of 27 machines turned out to do battle – not bad in today’s era. The three support classes were staples – IMCA modifieds, stock cars and northern sportmods.

I was on the mic at Outagamie Friday. I polled the crowd and asked by a show of hands how many folks were there for the first time of the season. Dozens of hands went up, and the goal obviously is to give the fans a great enough show where they may want to come back another Friday night or two during the season.

Seymour’s been taking a beating in recent weeks because of at times subpar track conditions. The racing surface was much improved the the last time I announced there in early June. The only hiccup was they wound up grading turn four immediately following the Dirt Kings heat races.  But, most feature races saw plenty of passing and multiple lead changes.

One of the cool things about being a track announcer is the fact that often, you can be on the call when a driver gets his or her first ever feature win. That occurred Friday night during a makeup feature from June 5 that was run in the IMCA stock car class. Kegan Van Ooyen captured that race. It was Kegan’s first feature flag in the class dubbed “too-tough-to-tame.”

I’ve known the Van Ooyen family for decades. Truth is, you won’t find a better racing family around. Friendly, down-to-earth and always supportive. I’m pretty sure you’ll find Kegan back in victory lane again soon.

BY THE NUMBERS – This past Friday night, there were three tracks within one our of Green Bay that hosted the same divisions: IMCA modifieds, stock car  northern sportmods. Outagamie Speedway and Luxy Raceway both had these three divisions IMCA sanctioned, while Gravity Park USA in Chilton runs this trio of classes non-sanctioned.

Which division had the most cars? (IMCA) stock cars led the way, with 67 drivers competing. (IMCA) northern sportmods were second with 64 participants and the (IMCA) modifieds were third with 59 different teams competing in the three classes. These numbers were simply pulled and added up via MyRacePass.

EAGLE RIVER SPEEDWAY IMCA FAST SHAFT QUALIFIER – For the first time ever this coming Tuesday, June 30, IMCA modifieds will take to Eagle River Speedway’s third-mile, clay oval. The first of two $1,000-to-win IMCA modified races will be held. The show will be draw/redraw. The buzz has been pretty positive about this event. I hate to name drop, as I’ve been burnt by drivers who SAID they’d show up. But, let’s just say I’m cautiously optimistic we should have a decent field of IMCA modifieds at Eagle River June 30. The second Fast Shaft qualifying race is set for Tuesday, July 21. The hammer drops at 7 p.m. IMCA modified drivers will get hot laps prior to the national anthem.

On Saturday, July 4 Eagle River Speedway will host it’s annual MSA sprint car special event. Joining the full-sized, sprint cars are the USRA late models, 600 and 300 micro sprints and Vintage modifieds and the Dairyland Vintage series. Racing  is set to commence at 6 p.m.

Norway, Michigan native Cameron Clifford picked up a 75 lap Carolina Crate late model feature at Hickory Motor Speedway. Clifford has lived in Mooresville, North Carolina for a few years now, and works for Port City Racecars. Wausau veteran Mark Mackesy swept action in the C.W.R.A. late models at Marshfield Motor Speedway Saturday.

Remember to get out and support your local race track IN PERSON whenever possible. NOTHING beats being there!
