We took a little four day, family vacation of sorts in South Dakota last week for the wife’s family reunion.

A great time was had by all – and it’s even better when your wife’s family is a bunch a racers. They are in WISSOTA country for the most part. However, I decided to sneak away Friday night with my grandson Rylan to catch a new track as a fan in the stands – Murray County Speedway in Slayton, MN.

The track surface was black dirt, smooth and well-prepped. Although the car counts were a tad low in the divisions, there was plenty of side-by-side racing going on. The track did play host to IMCA stock cars, hobby stocks and sport compacts among a few other classes.

Sometimes working in the business for as long as I have, it’s refreshing once in awhile to pay your ticket to watch and be entertained. You can take in things that you may not normally get to experience when you’re in the announcer’s booth, for example. I love striking up a conversation with a local race fan.

That’s a great way to get the real “skinny” as to what’s hot and what’s not at your local track.

At any rate, let’s look ahead to another busy week of racing as we enter July (already? Where is the summer going?)

EAGLE RIVER STOCK CARS – A $1,000 top prize awaits the winner of the IMCA stock car feature at Eagle River Speedway Tuesday, July 1. We have run that exciting division now for the 2nd year, and getting cars in that class to this beautiful northwoods oval has been a struggle at times.

However, when drivers from the south come up and give it a whirl, most of the time they find they like it. I hesitate to name drop as it’s burned me in the past, but there are some pretty big names that will be towing north for this event Tuesday night. The hammer drops at 7 p.m. That will be the first of two nights of racing at ERS next week, as the track’s popular “Open Wheels and Wings” show takes place Saturday, July 5 with the MSA sprint cars making their appearance for the third straight year.

Plymouth’s Ben Schmidt has won the past two seasons, and will be there for a crack at a three-peat. You’ll want to get the Eagle River early for this one, as it’s normally standing room only. The B mods, 300 and 600 micro sprints and Dairyland Vintage racers will be part of that Saturday night special, which kicks off at 6 p.m.

OUTAGAMIE – Late models will be on the card Friday, July 4 at Outagamie Speedway in Seymour. The track’s other divisions will also be in action: IMCA modifieds, stock cars, northern sportmods, sport compacts and street stocks. Racing gets underway at 6:30 p.m. at the Outagamie County Fairgrounds.

Last Friday night, Bonduel’s Nick Anvelink was involved in a wild wreck during the late model feature. The second-generation driver wound up on his lid. On a social media post, the team said they would not be racing anywhere this coming weekend. We hope to see the 15 car back in action sooner than later.

141 BLAST INTO CASH – 141 Speedway in Francis Creek will host a “Blast Into Cash” night Saturday, July 5. Divisions will race for boosted prize winnings: IMCA modifieds & stock cars ($2,000), IMCA northern sportmods ($1,000), Unified Dirt Street Stocks ($750) and IMCA sport compacts ($500). The racing action gets underway at 6 p.m.

SHAWANO – IMCA northern sportmods will battle for a $1,000 top prize Saturday, July 5 at Shawano Speedway. The action on the clay, half-mile is set to commence at 6 p.m.

THE HILL – The next race at The Hill Raceway in Sturgeon Bay is set for Saturday, July 19 with the track’s annual Hall of Fame night. It will be the night for the Busch Shootout for the northern sportmods. The action gets underway at John Miles Park at 6 p.m.

We’ve got to cut this one short for now. This week, get out and support your local race track IN PERSON whenever possible!
