JOHNSON, DORNER, VAN PAY & SCHLAFKE GRAB STURGEON BAY WINS by Joe Orsini
(STURGEON BAY, WI) July 27 – 67 racers checked in to battle for wins at The Hill Raceway in Sturgeon Bay for the Quantum technologies night at the races. The night was set to have added excitement with the Busch Shootout for the Stock Cars taking place after the completion of the four regular features.
The Woody’s Signs Stock Car feature event kicked off with Paul Barribeau leading the opening lap. Unfortunately that would be the only lap Barribeau would complete as his 79 car came out of turn 4 too high and contact with other cars would end his night early. The ensuing restart with one completed lap saw Chad Vetting inherit the lead and he held on to the top spot until lap 4 when Jeremy Johnson worked the high line to grab the lead. Zach Spangenber moved inside Vetting to 2nd on lap 8 and set his sites on reeling in Johnson. At the halfway mark Johnson was still atop the standings, Spangenberg 2nd, Vetting 3rd, “Tuffy” Tom Brumlic 4th, and Scott Reinhardt 5th. Johnson held on over the second half of the race to grab the win, Spangenberg settled for 2nd, Dan Sell Jr. followed up last week’s win with a 3rd place finish, Brumlic was 4th, and Reinhardt completed the top 5. The Stock Car Busch Shootout saw Troy Muench take home 180 Busch Lights courtesy of Flanigan Distributing.
The Kroll Machine and Fabrication Northern Sportmod A main event saw Trevin Veeser snatch the lead at the drop of the green but again a caution after the first lap marred the start of the event. The situation only got worse as lap 2, after the ensuing restart, had massive carnage in turn 2 as the red flag flew temporarily halting the event. Brad Miller and Rick LeMieux came out the worst as LeMieux’s car got underneath Miller’s car and put Miller almost upsidedown on his right side. In total 6 cars would retire early due to damage sustained in the melee. Once the race resumed Roger Laviolette was able to grab the top spot but point leader, Craig Dorner, was able to shake off any damage he had from the big one on lap 2 to the lead on lap 9. Dorner was able to pad his point lead with a win, Mike Plate Sr. backed up his win last week with a hard fought 2nd, Laviolette held on for a strong 3rd place finish, Brayden LeMieux was 4th, and Jeff “Pepe” Vlies rounded out the top 5.
The Millies Pub and Grub Unified Dirt Street Stock main event started the night’s features with David Hoerning racing to the early lead but, as with the other divisions, caution struck early with just 2 laps in. Hoerning lead TJ Everard, Eli Kaye, Dan “The Mullet” Van Pay, and Jimmy “Windows” Anderson back to racing speeds. By lap 5 Van Pay worked his way into 2nd and 2 laps later he slipped into the lead. While Van Pay tried to open up a lead he was helped by the multi lap side by side battle for 2nd between Hoerning and Everard. Hoerning ran the low line while Everard used the momentum of the high side to circle the third mile oval. When the checkers flew is was Van Pay securing the win, Hoerning won the battle for 2nd, Everard settled for 3rd, Chad Naze was 4th, and Matt Hanson was 5th.
The 4 Cylinder A-main kicked off with Barney DeVares shooting to the lead on the opening lap. Once again, like the three features before, the event was marred by a caution with one lap in the books. Point leader, Scott Schlafke, took advantage of the restart to wrestle away the top spot and never looked back as he sailed to victory. Nick Everard finished 2nd, DeVares 3rd, and Cheyenne Topel finished 4th.
The Hill Raceway is back in action Thursday, August 15th as part of the Door County Fair festivities. The Unified Dirt Grand Nationals will be on hand for their second appearance of the 2024 season. Racing will get underway at 6:30 and there is no added cost to get in for the races other than the fair admission.
