After a rainy Friday Saturday night the weather God’s finally blessed the area ovals with some decent, dry weather which resulted in solid crowds at tracks across the region.

Solid front gates (grandstands) were reported at Eagle River Speedway to the north, Shawano Speedway, 141 Speedway in Francis Creek and The Hill Raceway in Sturgeon Bay to the south.

In addition to the weather the respective programs were boosted with decent car counts as rainouts have prevented many teams from racing much at all in 2024. As tough as this might be to ponder in most cases we are already at the halfway point of the 2024 season for most tracks and series. Get out and support the in person whenever possible. Here’s a look at what’s ahead in the coming days and weeks:

SEYMOUR LATE MODELS – A $2,000 top prize awaits the winner of the late model feature at Outagamie Speedway in Seymour Friday, July 12. Other divisions will be competing for additional loot Friday IMCA modifieds ($1,000-to-win) and IMCA sport compacts ($500-to-win). Action gets underway at 6:30 p.m. at the Outagamie County Fairgrounds.

STURGEON BAY OFF – There will be no racing at The Hill Raceway in Sturgeon Bay this Saturday, July 13. Racing is scheduled to resume Saturday, July 20 as Millie’s Pub & Grub sponsor Hall of Fame night. The track’s regular divisions will be in action and the modifieds will also be competing for the 2nd time in 2024. Action is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at John Miles Park in Sturgeon Bay.

KING OF THE CREEK – Anticipation continues to build for the $10,000-to-win King Of The Creek VII at 141 Speedway in Francis Creek July 15-17. This is the highest paying event for IMCA stock cars in Wisconsin. On Tuesday night the 16th IMCA modifieds and grand nationals will be in action while on Wednesday night IMCA northern sportmods and street stocks will be in action. Check out the track’s Facebook page for 141speedway.com for additional information.

At a driver’s meeting at Shawano Speedway Saturday it was revealed that the half-mile clay oval will follow WISSOTA late model rules in 2025 with a full sanctioning of the division in 2026.

This won’t be the first time the track has sanctioned the late model class at Shawano. They were WISSOTA sanctioned in the 1980’s and again later in the late 1990’s-very early 2000’s.

Lots to unpack there obviously. The respective late model ‘roster’ if you will in northeastern Wisconsin hasn’t had too much new blood in recent years for obvious reasons. Will having that common set of rules be the ‘magic bullet’ per se to bring the division back to respectable numbers with regards to car counts? Way too early and tough to say.

The last time late models were sanctioned WISSOTA in this neck of the woods Seymour Tri-Oval hosted the cars weekly on Sunday nights along with Langlade County Speedway in Antigo. So the collective pool of the cars was quite a bit ‘deeper’ than it is in 2024 – especially with three tracks hosting the division weekly.

I will say this that when Shawano was WISSOTA sanctioned and we’d host some bigger paying events at Shawano the western Wisconsin/eastern Minnesota teams would travel. Outagamie may be onto something with their sprinkling in some late model dates on their season schedule. How will this affect Dirt Kings? Plymouth Dirt Track? Time will ultimately tell whether or not this move is one that will help steer the division in the right direction.

KARTING KORNER – GSR Kartway has announced District 16 Flat Track AMA sanctioned motorcycle races will return to SGR Saturday August 3 and Sunday, August 4 at the eighth-mile, clay oval located in Clintonville. Action gets underway at 6 p.m. Saturday night and at noon on Sunday. Check out gsrkartway.com. The track will also host its weekly karting and lawn mower racing program Wednesday, July 10 with racing getting underway at 7 p.m.

After sitting quiet last Friday racing action returns to Little Buckaroo Jr. Motorsports Park in Cecil Friday, July 12. Raddant Electric is sponsoring the night of go kart racing which gets underway at 7 p.m.

PAVEMENT PONDERINGS – It will be “White Race, Take III” at Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna Thursday, July 11. The White Race has been rained out two weeks in a row. The All Star Challenge that was washed out July 4 for Pro late models will not be rescheduled.

NATIONALS – The 45th running of the prestigious Slinger Nationals is slate for Tuesday, July 9 with a raindate of Wednesday, July 10 at Slinger Super Speedway in Slinger. 29 super late model teams are pre-entered for this big event held at the World’s Fastest Quarter-Mile. Racing gets underway Tuesday night at 6:20 p.m. The winner will take home the $20,000 top prize.

This past Sunday the Midwest Truck Series hosted the ‘Prelude To The Nationals 60 and Appleton’s Brandon Reichenberger captured the win. Random Lake’s Brad “JJ” Mueller placed fifth, Freedom’s Cody Vander Loop finished 8th and Amherst’s Eugene Gregorich III took 9th.

TUNDRA LEFTOVERS – Wausau racers Jevin Guralski and Brock Heinrich took 6th and 8th place, respectively in the North American Cup 100 TUNDRA super late model feature at Dells Raceway Park Saturday. Gleason’s Justin Mondeik finished 10th. The race was won by Elko, Minnesota’s Tristan Swanson. 25 super late models were on hand for the TUNDRA event.

Minnesotan Ty Frederickson holds an 18 point lead over Mondeik in the series standings after DRP. The next event for TUNDRA will be September 2 at Golden Sands Speedway in Plover September 2 for the Cleaver Classic. Check out tundrasuperlates.com for additional information.

MIDWEST TOUR – The Wayne Carter Classic 100 is the next event on deck for the Midwest Tour at Grundy County Speedway in Morris, Illinois Saturday, July 13. The Midwest Truck Series and Midwest Dash series will also be on the card. Qualifying is set for 5:40 p.m. with the first green flag flying at 7 p.m. You can check out midwesttour.racing for additional information.
