58 cars and stars signed in to do battle at the Hill Shootout Special Saturday night at John Miles Park. The night started with paying tribute to the members of PKS3, Brandon Peterson, Martin Kelsey, Mike Sargent, Melanie Sargent, and John Sternard as the promotions group is stepping away from running the track after this season. The group kept racing in Door County alive for the last 7 years. Their effort and dedication week in and week out was on display once again with the season ending special event. The fans, drivers, crews, workers, and community will forever appreciate the hard work put into getting the track back on solid footing after it lay dormant for a year.
Dan Sell Jr. grabbed the lead of the Stock Car A-main event at the drop of the green. Sell had no chance to open a gap as caution quickly flew with only 3 laps in the books. On the early restart Sell maintained the top spot but the action was getting hot further back in the pack where John Adams and Jeremy Johnson staged a multi lap, door to door battle for 4th. Lap 9 saw Adams lock up the position and a lap later Brett Wenzel nipped Johnson for 5th as well. Lap 14 saw Adams grab 2nd and Wenzel continued his pursuit and raced to 3rd on lap 15. Sell continued to lead the final 5 circuits and captured the win, Adams was 2nd, Wenzel 3rd, “Wheels” Cody Patten 4th, and Kerry Douglas completed the top 5.
The Sport Mod 20 lap feature kicked off with Randy LeMieux Jr. using the pole position to lead the opening lap. The Sport Mods were also slowed early as the yellow flag came out early as John Koessl, Russ Franks, Scott Howe, and Geno Sternard all came to a rest in turn one. “Hacksaw” Jerry Duggan came out the worst of the situation as his racer was not involved in the caution but his steel chariot was unable to continue for the restart and he dropped out of the event while running 5th. LeMieux maintained control of the race on the restart and never looked back as he cruised to victory. Jonathan Baumann capped off a strong night with a 2nd place finish, Bernie Reinhardt was 3rd, Jeff “Pepe” Vlies 4th, and Matt Maki IV rounded out the top 5.
The Unified Dirt Street Stock feature saw John Denil Jr. pounce on the top spot from his outside front row starting spot. Denil was quickly embroiled in a three wide fight for the lead with Troy Muench and Eddie “The Eagle” Anschutz. Before that battle was decided another early caution slowed the pace as Eli Phillips experienced mechanical issues. On the restart Anschutz wasted no time claiming sole possession of 1st place while Muench slipped by Denil into 2nd. Denial’s strong night ended early as caution came out again with 11 laps to go when his racer came up gimpy on the back stretch. “The Muscles From Brussels” Garrett Geyer also pulled off under the yellow with mechanical issues. Anschutz stayed in command on the restart and held court over the final half of the race to capture the win. Muench was 2nd followed by Marcus Moede, Shannon Guelette, and Devin Yaeger at the line.
James Riske led the opening lap and never looked back as he went wire to wire to capture the Bomber division feature win. Barney DeVares came home 2nd, Scott Schlafke 3rd, Eugene Winkel 4th, and Brooklyn Eisner was 5th.
The next event will be the awards banquet on Saturday, December 9th, at The Lodge at Leatham Smith in Sturgeon Bay. Champions, Rookies of the Year, and top 10 in points will be awarded in the Stock Cars, Sport Mods, and Street Stocks. Top 3 in points for the Modifieds and Bombers.
