Seeing a number 54 win an IMCA modified feature in the local circles hasn’t necessarily been a shocker in recent years.

After all Wisconsin’s winningest driver in sanctioned victories – Luxemburg native Benji LaCrosse – has sported the number 54 for his entire career.

But last Saturday night it was another 54 who would find victory lane for the first time in his career in the IMCA modified division. Brillion’s Travis Hansen, who sports number 54h, picked up the feature win at 141 Speedway in Francis Creek Saturday.

Hansen is in his fourth year of wheeling an IMCA modified. The Brillion racer started out racing IMCA northern sportmods in 2015.

Major props go out to De Pere native Johnny “Hitman” Whitman. Whitman scored the IMCA modified feature win at Shawano Speedway on retro night. Whitman, with the help of “Sticker Chad” Nelson of Victory Sign, brought an Eddie Muenster tribute car from the late 1980’s. In addition, Shawano Speedway did make good on the scale fiasco from a few weeks ago and awarded Whitman the $3,000 top prize.

Word on the street is the Shawano track prep was much improved and a shout out to Shawano Speedway for making that situation right with Whitman and the scales.

After winning the $2,000 top prize at Plymouth Dirt Track’s Super Six Series win, the second-generation racer from Navarino opted not to compete in the Dirt Kings late model series race at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie.

That, despite Anvelink holding a 12-point lead over Seymour’s Mike Mullen heading into the Sunday night show at Angell Park.

The Dirt Kings feature was washed out but Brandon Schmitt won the IMCA modified feature at Angell Park, a “home game” win of sorts for the Sun Prairie racer. With his $1,000 victory, Schmitt earned a berth on the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. It was the first IMCA sanctioned modified race at the bullring known for it’s strong midget racing tradition for several decades.

TUNDRA LEFTOVERS – Gleason’s Justin Mondeik picked up the TUNDRA super late model series win at State Park Speedway in Wausau Sunday. Locals took the podium spots with Wausau’s Brock Heinrich and Kronenwetter’s Travis Volm placing 2nd and 3rd, respectively. TUNDRA travelers John Beale of Verona and Appleton’s Jordan Thiel took fourth and fifth place money, respectively.

Props to the folks at TUNDRA for sticking it out and running the show despite rain showers that fell late morning and into the early afternoon. I was reminded what a racy joint the quarter-mile paved oval is. They ran a fast-paced show and we were on the road at a decent hour when it wrapped up. And props to seemingly ageless Jim Duchow. Despite battling some health issues, “The Duke” collected one of the WIR ¼ mile features that run as support divisions with TUNDRA at Wausau Sunday.

SEYMOUR – Outagamie Speedway in Seymour has announced its annual Fall Brawl will comprise of a two day show Friday and Saturday September 8 and 9. The tracks weekly divisions will be in action along with a full grand national program on Friday night. Saturday’s show will feature the Dirt Kings Tour with a full show. You can learn more about the details at outagamiespeedway.com.

LUXEMBURG – The grand nationals will be the guest division, joining the track’s regular IMCA-sanctioned classes at The ‘Burg Speedway Sunday, August 20. The program, presented by Bug Tusssel, gets underway at 5 p.m. at the Kewaunee County Fairgrounds.

CHAMPIONSHIP NIGHT – Champions will be crowned as the final night of points racing will take place at The Hill Raceway in Sturgeon Bay Saturday, August 19. The modifieds will also be in action for their third and final round of special events at the third-mile clay oval located at John Miles Park. The action gets underway at 6 p.m.

CAPTAIN OF CREEK V – It will be the IMCA northern sportmods turn to shine during the Captain Of The Creek V at 141 Speedway in Francis Creek this week. Qualifying races are set for Tuesday, August 15 with the big $10,000-to-win feature slated for Wednesday, August 16. Support classes on Tuesday include IMCA modifieds and grand nationals. On Wednesday the support divisions will be IMCA stock cars and sport compacts. Racing gets underway at 7 p.m. both nights.

KARTING KORNER – Fans at GSR Kartway in Clintonville will be treated to a corn roast courtesy of Mares Farm Market Wednesday, August 16. The Racing For Education night program featuring karts and lawn mowers commences at 7 p.m.

It will be fan appreciation night presented by Schmitty’s Diesel at Little Buckaroo Jr. Motorsports Park Friday, August 18. The action at the Cecil, Wisconsin karting oval is slated to begin at 7 p.m.

The season is winding down. It will be a wrap before you know it. Make plans to attend a local short track near you IN PERSON whenever possible. Always remember NOTHING beats being there.
