Running her second full time season exclusively on the local dirt track scene, De Pere native Reagan May picked up the IMCA northern sportmod feature at The ‘Burg Speedway in Luxemburg Sunday night.

May, who abandoned the paved track racing scene a couple of years ago, has been wheeling an IMCA northern sportmod on area dirt ovals. Instead of running exclusively for points, this design engineer for Oshkosh Defense’s schedule limits her to popping in from track to track.

Meanwhile on the pavement Wausau’s Brock Heinrich didn’t even have plans initially to compete in the Larry Detjens Memorial race at State Park Speedway in Wausau this past weekend.

Those plans for this past weekend initially involved being being on a boat – worlds away from climbing into the cockpit of a race car.

Heinrich was able to land some local sponsors to help him field an entry in the event at his home track. Heinrich inherited the lead with four laps remaining after leader John Beale and current Midwest Tour point leader Gabe Sommers collided and spun.

The hometown driver made the decision to race pay off with a win in the Midwest Tour event – one which honored the Wausau racing legend Detjens who died in 1981.

The next contest for the Midwest Tour will be the co-sanctioned event with the ASA STARS National Tour with the Gandrud Auto Group 250 at Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna Tuesday night, August 1. The Midwest Truck Series will also be in action in the Tuesday night biggie.

Meanwhile Heinrich is among the expected entries when the TUNDRA super late model series returns to State Park on Sunday, August 13.

WASHED OUT – Despite the best efforts of track staff, driver’s attempting to pack the track and IRA sprint car series officials, Mother Nature unfortunately took the checkered flag on Fair night at the Outagamie County Fair in Seymour Friday night.

The track’s regular, weekly five division program featuring IMCA modifieds, stock cars, northern sportmods, sport compacts and Unified street stocks will resume Friday, July 28 at 6:30 p.m.

BY THE NUMBERS – 115 is the number of IMCA modified feature wins Fremont’s Mike Wedelstadt earned after he was awarded the victory Saturday night at Shawano Speedway. Wedelstadt crossed the finish line second behind Johnny Whitman. Whitman was disqualified after the show for being light at the scales. According to Whitman, his car weighed three different weights after rolling his car across Shawano’s scales post-race – 20 lbs on the first attempt, 140 lbs. on the 2nd attempt and 40 lbs. on the third and final attempt. 27 is the number of different modified drivers who’ve captured feature wins so far on area ovals in ’23. 12 is the number of feature wins Manitowoc’s Paul Diefenthaler has scored so far in 2023. The last win came at Luxemburg in the Unified street stocks Sunday.

136 is the number of IMCA modified feature wins Luxemburg native Benji LaCrosse has earned following his win at The ‘Burg Speedway in Luxemburg Sunday. 119 is the car number of the IMCA northern sportmod feature winner at Luxemburg Sunday night – Reagan May.

LUXEMBURG BONUS CASH – Feature winners at The ‘Burg Speedway in Luxemburg will be awarded some bonus cash Sunday, July 30 courtesy of Carter Construction. An extra $500 will be doled out to the feature winners that evening. Racing gets underway at 5 p.m.

THE HILL – The Hill Raceway in Sturgeon Bay will be off this weekend. However, the third-mile, clay oval located at John Miles Park in Sturgeon Bay will return to action Saturday, August 5 for the track’s Hall of Fame night. The 2023 inductees include 13-year track promoter Bryan “Woody” Wodack and former racers Aaron Thornton and Matt Junio.

DIRT KINGS DOUBLEHEADER – The Langlade County Fairgrounds big half-mile will come to life Friday, July 28 with its only racing program of the year during the Langlade County Fair in Antigo. The Dirt Kings late model tour will make a stop, with modifieds, stock cars and sportmods running as support divisions. The action gets underway at 7 p.m.

The Tour swings back to Shawano Speedway the following night where racing gets underway at 6 p.m.

MSA SPRINTERS – For the first time in the track’s 48-year history full-sized, winged sprint cars will tackle Eagle River Speedway’s third-mile, clay oval during the track’s “Wings and Open Wheel” night. Joining the sprint cars from the Midwest Sprint Association (MSA) will be the track’s B modifieds, 300 and 600 micro sprints and a guest appearance from the 500 outlaw sprints that normally compete at Escanaba (MI) Speedway.

It’s a great opportunity for those sportmod racers who normally can’t tow north on the track’s regular Tuesday night races to give Eagle River a try. A 7 p.m. start time is set for Eagle River.

141 BACK ON – After a weekend off racing resumes at 141 Speedway in Francis Creek Saturday, July 29. Powder Puff races will be on the card with Unified street stocks scrapping for a $1,000 top prize. Racing action gets underway at 6 p.m.

KARTING KORNER – Interested in a kart rental program? Check out GSR Kartway in Clintonville on Wednesday nights. Kart and lawn mower races take place each Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Call Brandon Blashe at (920) 915 1471 to inquire about the kart rental program.

P & D Construction/Village Companies sponsors the night of karting action at Little Buckaroo Jr. Motorsports Park in Cecil Friday, July 28 at 7 p.m. The Jr. 2 division will have driver introductions prior to their feature race.

Remember to hydrate this week (it’s gonna be a hot one) and get out and support your local short track in person whenever possible. NOTHING beats being there. I know the wife and I will be taking in the Langlade County Fair and I guess since there’s a race there in Antigo we may as well stick around for that.
