Mike Wedelstadt will be the first to admit the wins don’t come nearly as easy as they once did when his racing career started decades ago.

But last Tuesday at Beaver Dam Raceway the longtime IMCA modified veteran from Fremont ended a seven year dry spell when he captured the division’s feature at the third-mile, clay oval.

The win was Wedelstadt’s 114th career sanctioned feature flag. The last sanctioned win Wedelstadt earned was in 2016, although he’s won non-sanctioned events since then.

Currently in Wisconsin’s all time rankings Wedelstadt sits fourth in all time sanctioned modified feature wins. Ironically all of the current top five drivers remain active in 2023.

Benji LaCrosse, Green Bay, 135

 Brian Mullen, Seymour, 129

 R.M. VanPay, Green Bay, 129

Mike Wedelstadt, Fremont, 114

 Todd Dart, Algoma, 81

BY THE NUMBERS – 1 is the number of super late model feature wins Appleton’s Jordan Thiel has under his belt at Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna.

Thiel scored his first career super late model win last Thursday night at WIR.

100 percent is what Green Bay’s Chad Butz’ winning percentage is at Norway (MI) Speedway in 2023. Butz won the Stateline Challenge June 30 after also winning at the track’s HOF night the Friday prior.

$1,000 dollars is the amount of prize money won by Shawano’s Jordan Bartz after winning the IMCA modified feature at Shawano Speedway Saturday.

31 is the number of sportmod drivers who’ve collected feature wins at regional dirt ovals in 2023. That number includes both IMCA sanctioned and non-sanctioned events.

7 is the number of days until the next Midwest Tour event, which will be the Wayne Carter Classic at Grundy County Speedway in Morris, Illinois Saturday July 8.

$2,000 REASONS – Fans can watch an interesting mix of WISSOTA style street stocks and IMCA style stock cars square off at Eagle River Speedway Tuesday July 4. The track’s weekly stock car division consists of drivers in both classes and the two blend well together on the third-mile, clay oval.

A $2,000 top prize is on the line for a 30 lap feature – a race which was won by IMCA stock car ace Tom Brumlic of Denmark last year.  A fireworks display will also be on tap for the Mark Zdroik Memorial. With most folks off on the 4th the odds of getting a few more travelers, especially in the B modified division, remain high.

So far in 2023 hometown driver David Blackberg has been the man to beat. The defending track champion has earned three of the four feature wins with a WISSOTA style street stock. Another hometown racer, former track promoter Ryan Glembin, has captured the other division win with an IMCA style stock car.

Of note it’s an earlier start time for the program July 4 at 7 p.m. ERS late models, B mods, street stocks, 300 and 600 micro sprints are also on the card. I’ve always said it that Eagle River is a track every race fan should put on their bucket list.

LUXEMBURG BACK ON – After having the holiday weekend off, racing returns to The ‘Burg Speedway in Luxemburg Sunday, July 9. The Dirt Kings late models will invade the third-mile, clay oval at the Kewaunee County Fairgrounds. The track’s regular, weekly divisions will also be in action which include IMCA modifieds, stock cars, northern sportmods, Unified street stocks and Murder Hornets.

A 5 p.m. start is on tap. On another Luxemburg scheduling note the Hall of Fame night that was rained out has been rescheduled for Sunday, July 23.  Also yours truly will be hosting a book signing underneath the grandstands from 3:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. Fans can get a FREE copy of my 2021 release “5-10-32 McBride, Parker & Anvelink” with a purchase of any my seven titles.

THE HILL – After being off for a short while action heats back up Saturday, July 8 at The Hill Raceway in Sturgeon Bay with it’s annual “Christmas in July” program.

Round I of the modified division will be a part of the show as will driver introductions in the street stock class. Action gets underway at 6 p.m. at John Miles Park.

OUTAGAMIE SPEEDWAY – Heading into this Friday’s action at Outagamie Speedway Manitowoc’s Diefenthaler holds a 14 point lead in the Unified street stock class over Black Creek’s Justin Jacobsen.

Appleton’s Cory Kemkes currently has an eight point edge over Hortonville’s Ryan Schmidt in the IMCA northern sportmods while in the IMCA stock cars Little Suamico’s Tyler Wilson has a nine point margin over Sobieski’s Nick Buckarma.

Clintonville’s Lucas Lamberies lead remains at 15 points over Manitowoc’s Cody Schroeder in the IMCA modifieds while in the IMCA sport compacts Oshkosh’s Cody Booth has a slim four point margin over Green Bay’s Brett Deprez. The action gets underway at 6:30 p.m. at the Outagamie County Fairgrounds in Seymour.

KARTING KORNER – After having off the holiday weekend action returns to Little Buckaroo Jr. Motorsports Park in Cecil Friday, July 7.

The track’s “Christmas in July” program will take place presented by Renewal By Anderson. A 7 p.m. start time is on tap for the karting program.

GSR Kartway will have Clintonville Bearing Night present the night of kart and lawn mower racing at the Clintonville oval Wednesday, July 5. Action gets underway at 7 p.m.
