MULLEN, STEDJEE AMONG LUXEMBURG OPENING NIGHT WINNERS (Submitted by Joe Orsini)
(Luxemburg, WI) May 21 – Seymour’s Mike Mullen and Shiocton’s Dylan Stedjee were among the opening night winners at The ‘Burg Speedway in Luxemburg here Sunday in the IMCA modified and stock car divisions, respectively.
90 cars found their way into the pits as all five 2022 division champions were on hand to mount a challenge on back to back titles. However all eyes were on the new clay surface as 60 loads of fresh material was worked into the track in the offseason. Steve Parsons was on hand to award the Kim Parsons Memorial Trophy Tour trophies to the night’s winners. Thank you to Snap On Tools dealer, Jared Siefert, for sponsoring this stop of the trophy tour.
The Village Kitchen IMCA Modified feature had some big names starting on the front row thanks to the draw\redraw format of opening night. Five time champ. RM Van Pay drew the pole position while jack of all trades hot shoe, Mullen returned to the home of his first modified feature victory with an outside front row starting spot. At the drop of the green Van Pay grabbed the advantage coming out of Showcase Kitchens turn number four and led the opening lap. Van Pay’s time at the front was short lived as the 99 of Mullen was able to get a nose inside the former champ and took away to preferred bottom line moving to the top spot. When the double checkers flew Mullen captured the Kim Parsons Memorial Trophy, Van Pay hung on for second, Hunter Parsons was third, Jeremy Jacobs finished fourth, and Kyle Kudick rounded out the top five.
The Quietwoods RV IMCA Stock Car A-main event saw disaster averted as outside pole sitter, Luke Lemmens, broke his right front suspension on the opening lap. The veteran driver was able to keep his 007 machine on the top of the track and the field safely cleared his limping car. Lemmens poor luck opened the door for Shawn Havel to grab the early lead while Stedjee put the clamps on the second spot. As Stedjee looked to protect the bottom line the pack behind the lead duo sliced and diced for position. Stedjee bobbled just enough to slide up the track and it appeared as if half the field was going to freight train the 3D on the bottom side as Stedjee started falling back. After accepting the only option was the higher groove Stedjee proved to be his own freight train back to second and staged a multi lap door to door battle with Havel for the lead. With the white flag being displayed Stedjee pulled out of turn four with a bumper’s advantage over Havel at the stripe. Caution came out on the final lap so Stedjee grabbed the yellow and checker to steal a hard fought victory. Havel settled for second, 2022 Mod champ, Jared Siefert, took third in a possible bid for back to back championships in different divisions, 2022 Stock Car champ, Kyle Frederick started his title defense with a fourth place finish, and Tyler Wilson completed the top five.
2022 champ, Cody Rass, kicked off his title defense leading from green to checkers in the IMCA Northern Sport Mod feature. The father – son duo of Jeff “Pepe” Vlies, and Coy Vlies came home second and third, Craig Dorner finished fourth, and Skyler Woods closed out the top five.
The NEW Tech Metals Unified Dirt Street Stock feature had Trey Van Straten grab the lead on the opening lap from the outside front row. Van Straten never looked back as he led wire to wire to open the season with a win. Jason Geyer came home second, 2022 division champ, Shannon Guelette, brought the 111 car home third, perennial title contender “The Hammer” Dave DeGrave was fourth, and Dylan Breit was fifth.
James Riske held off a furious late race charge from Trever Cronick to secure the Murder Hornet Victory. Cronick settled for second, defending champ, Scott Schlafke, was third, Neil Watcka finished fourth, and Adam Broehm fifth.
