Random Lake veteran Brad “JJ” Mueller, perhaps Wisconsin’s most actively diverse short track racer in 2023, came out swinging during the inaugural running of the “Super Six” late model series at Plymouth Dirt Track Saturday.

Mueller opened up the evening scoring quick time in group qualifying and was able to nab the opening night feature win in the 18 car field.

The Plymouth win was Mueller’s 24th career feature flag at the home track of the four time PDTR late model champion.

During the off season PDTR trimmed the number of nights the late model class would compete at the Sheboygan County third-mile clay oval to six.

But through the efforts of dirt late model enthusiasts Chad Marquardt and Greg Wester, the pair rounded up enough product and cash sponsors to boost the pay and do everything they can to keep the car counts solvent for this series.

Mueller has scored track titles on the pavement at Slinger Super Speedway in addition to his Plymouth crowns. He’s raced in the NASCAR Craftsman truck and ARCA series and in 2023 has both a pavement super late model and a Midwest Truck Series truck at his disposal.  All that in addition to supporting the Dirt Kings late model tour.

The next scheduled race for the six race series will be Saturday, May 13.

GRAVITY PARK WINS AGAIN – While many other tracks in the region got soaked out by Mother Nature for the fourth straight week Gravity Park USA in Chilton dodged the foul weather and was able to get their Friday night show in.

And guys like Green Bay’s Jake Carpenter and hometown racer Mitch Meier couldn’t be happier. Both drivers scored their third feature wins of the year at Gravity in the sportmod and stock car divisions, respectively.

Meanwhile while PDTR got their show in two programs to the north 141 Speedway in Francis Creek and Shawano Speedway had their Saturday night shows washed out for the fourth straight week. Both programs will attempt to get their season openers in this Saturday night.

OUTAGAMIE OPENER – After having it’s scheduled opener weathered out last Friday night, Outagamie Speedway in Seymour will attempt to get their first race of the season in this Friday night, May 12. Racing in the five division program is scheduled to get underway at 6:30 at the Outagamie County Fairgrounds.

THE ‘BURG – The season opening night of racing for The ‘Burg Speedway in Luxemburg is set for Sunday night, May 21. The weekly Sunday night show consists of IMCA modifieds, stock cars, northern sportmods, Unified street stocks and Murder Hornets. The pits and grandstand open at 3 p.m. with the first green flag flying at 5 p.m. A practice session originally set for Sunday, May 7 has been pushed back to Sunday, May 14th.

THE HILL RACEWAY UPDATE – Officials at The Hill Raceway in Sturgeon Bay have announced the car show that was rained out last weekend will take place at 1 p.m. on the track’s opening night date Saturday, May 20 at John Miles Park. Racing gets underway at 6 p.m.

TUNDRA TIME – Round 1 of the Tundra Super Late Model series opens up at Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna Saturday, May 13. Joining the super late models on the half-mile will be the Mid-American stock car series. The WIR 1/4 mile late models and sport trucks are also on the card.

The season opening race for WIR’s oval has qualifying set for 12:30 p.m. and the first race set to get underway at 2 p.m.

JOE SHEAR CLASSIC NOTEBOOK – Minnesotan Dan Frederickson topped the 38 car super late model field and crossed the finish line first in the $15,000-to-win Joe Shear Classic at Madison International Speedway Sunday. However Frederickson was disqualified after post race tech, handing the victory to current NASCAR truck series points leader and multi time Midwest Tour champ Ty Majeski of Seymour who crossed the line second.

In Midwest Truck Series action Palos Park, Illinois racer James Lynch emerged triumphant in the series opener at MIS. Former series champ James Swan of Lake Geneva took third.  Appleton drivers Jordan Thiel and Brandon Reichenberger finished eighth and eleventh, respectively while Amherst’s Eugene Gregorich Jr. took 14th.

The next Midwest Tour event is set for Saturday, May 27 with the “Salute The Troops 100” at Jefferson Speedway while the next stop for the Midwest Trucks will be Saturday, May 20 at State Park Speedway in Wausau.
