CALMES WINS THE BATTLE, SCHULTZ WINS THE WAR AT WIR THURSDAY NIGHT CURTAIN CLOSER
(KAUKAUNA, WI) September 2 – Freedom’s Kyle Calmes sped to victory in the super late model feature at Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna Thursday but Reedsville’s Maxwell Schultz scored the division’s track title – his first Thursday night crown in his career.
Champions were also crowned in the other respective divisions. They included Kaukauna’s Nathan Van Wychen (late model), the team of Josh Mueller and Mitch Meyerhofer of Sherwood (super stock), Appleton’s Mike Reichenberger (1/4 mile late model), Denmark’s Bobby Wautier (sport truck), Little Chute’s Ethan and Evan Beattie (Sizzlin’ 4) and Darboy’s Terry Van Roy (Figure 8s).
Neenah veteran Lowell Bennett paced the opening five laps of the 35 lap contest. Bennett began to quickly build a four car length lead that was wiped out on lap five when the cars of Mike Anthony and Sawyer Effertz made contact coming out of turn four, sending both racers into a spin.
On the restart Bennett kept the top spot but was pressured from Nick Van and Kyle Calmes. The trio pulled away from the field with Bennett holding off the charges for the next several circuits. Calmes pulled door-to-door with Bennett and squeezed past him for the lead on lap 11. Calmes quickly began to check out and distanced himself from the field.
Calmes kept the top spot for the balance of the race to capture the win. By virtue of his sixth place finish Schultz secured his first Thursday night super late model crown by three points over Grant Griesbach, who placed fourth in the super late model feature.
In the late model class it was pretty cut and dried – whichever driver finished ahead of the other with Kaukauna’s Nathan Van Wychen and Appleton’s Bryan Monday odds were strong that driver would secure the division title.
Appleton’s Brandon Reichenberger won the caution free feature race. Van Wychen finished third, two spots ahead of Bryan Monday. That allowed Van Wychen to capture his first title at his home track.
In the super stock feature hometown driver Trevor Howard did all he could do in his title bid. Entering the night Howards was 17 points behind Josh Mueller. Howard sped to victory but Mueller, who team drove with Mitch Meyerhover all year placed fifth and that was enough to allow him to secure a five point margin and win the super stock crown.
In ¼ mile late model action Reichenberger scored the feature win in the second division feature with fast qualifier Dylan Wenzel nabbing the first main event.
The Sizzlin’ 4 feature went green until the white flag was displayed. A three car melee ensued in turn one, which forced the race to end with the yellow and the checkered flag thrown. The race was won by Jake Peters.
All Wautier had to do was essentially take the green in the sport truck feature, which he did. In doing so Wautier nailed down the track title. Clintonville’s Landon Braatz scored the feature win by the slimmest of margins – .011 seconds over Cody Vander Loop.
Wrightstown’s Bret Vande Hey captured the V6 Roval feature.
The Fox River Racing Club and Wisconsin International Raceway management would like to thank the fans, race teams and track employees for a successful 2021 racing season.
