BUTZ SURVIVES TANGLE WITH MONDEIK, CAUTIONS, COPS NORWAY AUTO VALUE SERIES RACE

(It’s Pontbriand again in super stock action)

(Norway, MI) July 16 – Current point leader Chad Butz of Green Bay, Wisconsin survived a tangle with Gleason’s Justin Mondeik with 10 laps remaining and sweated out a pair of late cautions to win Round I of the Auto Value series at Norway Speedway Friday.

Butz also scored fast time and won the dash, scoring a clean sweep for the evening.

Iron Mountain’s Cory Cootware led the early going of the 50 lap contest with Butz and Mondeik working their way into the 3rd and 4th spots by lap eight, respectively. Butz wrestled the second spot away from Scott Stanchina one circuit later and it took Butz just one more round to take the lead from Cootware.

Mondeik quickly disposed of Stanchina and slowly reeled in Butz and the pair pulled away from the field. With ten laps remaining Mondeik and Butz tangled battling for the lead in turn one. Per track policy Mondeik ‘tapped out’ essentially admitting fault in the incident and went to the back while Butz was able to keep the lead.

Butz kept the lead through late caution periods and scored the win. Dan Lindsley recovered from an early race yellow to charge through the field to take second. Stanchina, Jason Wells and Tanner Kelly took third through fifth, respectively.

Current super stock point leader Joey Pontbriand executed a risky, three wide pass inside of Tim Schultz and Tony Wender on lap 16 and survived heavy pressure from Schultz to win the super stock feature.

With six laps remaining Schultz had nowhere to go on the backstretch when two cars spun, and his car slammed the guardrail. Schultz was unhurt but his car was too damaged to continue.

In stock car action Norway’s John Ostermann crossed the finish line first with his modified. However his car broke the 18 second bracket rule, in which a driver is sent to the tail of the field. This awarded the feature win to second place finisher Gary Thom.

Dean Bellmore emerged triumphant in the 4 banger class while Marquette’s Reece Cavin won the fuel injected Ford Mustang feature.

Next Friday, July 23 the track will host it’s annual Fan Appreciation night presented by Thirsty Whale Bar and Grill, Baker Sign Company and the Iron Mountain Rec Center. Racing gets underway at 7 p.m.
