EAGLE RIVER CHAMPS HAUL HOME HARDWARE AT ’21 SEASON ENDING BANQUET

(EAGLE RIVER, WI) May 1 – Track champions in six different divisions were honored as Eagle River Speedway hosted it’s 2021 awards banquet at Chef Rene’s in Eagle River Friday night.

Leading the way with a pair of track championships was hometown driver Jason Zdroik. Zdroik captured both the B modified and Eagle River late model division titles. In the late models Zdroik won nine of the 11 feature races held.

Zdroik found the going more difficult in a tougher B mod class where he garnered five feature flags after holding off Phillips veteran Mickey Nosser in the final points.

It was another hometown driver – David Blackberg who scored the track title in the stock car class. Blackberg was chasing former track champion “Hot Rod” Snellenberger of Pulaski for much of the year. Blackberg would wind up with three feature wins in the division when the final checkers flew.

Ontonagon, Michigan’s Dave Dishaw beat out hometown driver Ryan Brown by 10 points to capture the street stock title. Dishaw found victory lane five times in 2022. Phillips Roger Walker won three of the four pure stock features held at the third-mile, clay oval in ’21 to secure that division crown.

Phelps Dustin Kangas scored both the most improved driver award and the track title in the 600 micros. While Kangas scored just one feature win, he placed in the runner up spot six times in feature races to hold off Minocqua’s Andy Fink by a mere five points to secure the title on the final night of racing.

When it came to the 300-micro division Tomahawk’s Kaeden Bethel dominated action for much of the season. Bethel’s eight feature wins helped him secure the class title over another Kayden – “Bubba” Halsey of Eagle River.

Most improved driver awards were doled out to Phillips Peter Paulus (B mod), Dorchester’s Oakley Schwantes (300 micro), Eagle River’s Joe Leveille (street stock), Brown (stock car) and Clearwater’s Danny Zelten (ERS late model) in addition to Kangas.

In rookie-of-the-year honors 62-year-old John Ostermann of Norway, Michigan earned that distinction in the B Mods. Leveille scored R-O-Y in the street stocks while Marinesco, Michigan’s Duane Dunbar scored R-O-Y in the late models. Other R-O-Y honors went out to hometown driver Jonathon Miller (stock car) and Twin Lakes, Michigan’s Cooper Aho (300 micros). There were no rookie drivers in the 600 micros in 2021.

A hard luck award was given to late model racer Ollie Schoonover of Rhinelander.

Track promoters Pat and Patti Zdroik would like to thank all the teams who were able to attend the banquet. Folks are encouraged to follow updates with regards to the track at our Facebook page. The season opening race is set for Sunday, May 29 with regular Tuesday night racing beginning June 7 at 7:30 p.m.
